Ubuntu, Moblin and Dell Unite to Deliver a Moblin Netbook

With the convergence of the Intel Developer Forum and the LinuxCon event in the same week, there were no shortages of announcements and discussions about open source, Linux and Intel. One of the big announcements that crossed both of these events is the news that you can now purchase a Dell Netbook running the Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition.

The Moblin project is focused on building a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices (Netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices, etc.). While Moblin was started by Intel, it was turned over to the Linux Foundation in April. I didn't attend IDF, but I was at LinuxCon for all three days, and I was surprised by the amount of discussion about Moblin at the event. Granted, LinuxCon was a Linux Foundation event, but several of the keynote speakers and other presenters, including Mark Shuttleworth, talked about Moblin, and I kept hearing people talking about it in hallways and in the attendee lounge. People were very interested in learning more about how people are using Moblin in various distributions and on a variety of devices. This announcement about the Dell Ubuntu Moblin Netbook is sure to generate much more discussion on the topic of Moblin.

The Mini 10v starts at $299 with the following specs:

Another big related announcement is the launch of the Intel Atom Developer Program where developers can learn more about developing applications for Atom processors that can be sold in the application store.

All of these announcements come together to demonstrate that Moblin is ready to move into the mainstream. Anyone can purchase a ready to use Moblin system from Dell and general application developers can participate in the new Atom developer program to create and distribute more applications, while people from the Moblin community continue to contribute new enhancements to the Moblin project for future releases.
