Hello from Super Computing 08. The Intel Academic Community kicked off our time at SC08 with a rousing Bird of a Feather panel talk about Sequential programming and why we are still teaching it. There was great audience participation, with many sides of the issue raised. What model do you use to teach concurrent programming? Are the students ready for this, do they have the proper math skills? There were over 100 in attendance and many people remarked that they thought it was a worthy topic whose time has come.
I postulated that the real elephant in the room was that many professors do not have much experience or knowledge of concurrent programming and that is a road block to adoption. There was general agreement that this was indeed a “HUGE Elephant”, and the issue was how to create a massive training effort to educate the educators. I do not think that there are any easy answers here and I feel that a combined effort of industry and academia will be needed to solve this. Fortunately this already exists and we are working on this issue diligently.
If you are at SC08 I would welcome the chance to meet you and talk with you. I will be around the Intel booth Tuesday- Thursday. Come on by and if you are a professor I may just have a little gift for you.
