We want to see what you can do with the recently released Intel-sponsored versions of Havok Physics and Animation for the PC. Intel sponsors these releases to put the world’s best simulation tools in the hands of developers everywhere, and now we are looking for the best examples of these products being used in innovative ways. Your game demo could earn you cash, a gaming PC, great exposure and maybe even a job! Keep reading for all the details including important eligibility requirements and restrictions.
The contest has prizes for the entries based on the most innovative use of Havok technologies.
Your entry must be a playable* PC game demo that includes new or unique uses of Havok technology. We are looking for new ways for the player to interact with the game through physics, showing different uses of physics than what can be found in PC games shipping today. This can be a FPS, sports game, casual game, or any other type of game. Do not constrain your thinking!
For final judging, a panel of five (5) judges will review finalists and choose the winners. All entries must use the Intel-sponsored version of Havok Physics for PC
The winning entries will be judged on qualitative (new, realistic user experience) and quantitative (frames per second) criteria that include the following:
1. Use of physics in a way that has not been seen before
2. Using multiple features of Havok Physics and Animation
3. Realistic user interaction
4. Responsiveness
5. High quality visual content
6. Performance on Intel Core™2 microprocessor-based PCs
7. Number of votes garnered through the community
8. The entry must be submitted in one of the following formats: jpg, bmp, avi, wmv, mpg, mov.
Along with your physics game demo, we are looking for contributions that can benefit the larger software developer community. This can be any code sample, optimization tip, technical whitepaper, a technical abstract of your demo, or any technical content that shares your physics knowledge with the broader developer base. This is an optional category and is not a required part of the submission for the other categories.
A panel of five judges (5) will review all entries and choose the winners based on the following criteria:
Category 1 will have four (4) winners, each receiving a cash prize. First place will receive US$10,000, second place US$8,000 and third place US$5,000.
The fourth prize is dedicated to a participant from the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. Havok just celebrated the 10th anniversary of Havok& rsquo;s founding in Dublin, Ireland. For that reason we want to encourage entries from current Irish university students with a special prize of US$5,000. Entrants must be currently attending a third level institution within the island of Ireland, and must register using an email address with their school’s domain to qualify.
In addition, all four (4) winners of Category 1 will receive an All Access Pass (valued at US$2,000) to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) at San Francisco on March 23 – 27, 2009. Travel expenses are not included. The GDC All Access Pass will get you into all public events at GDC 2009. At the GDC, Intel will publicly announce the winners of the Havok Physics Innovation Contest and showcase winning entries in the Intel booth at GDC.
Category 2 will have two (2) winners. The first place will receive one (1) Velocity Micro® EdgeTM Z55 Gaming PC (or an equivalent model worth US$2,000). Second place will receive one (1) boxed Intel® Core 2 ExtremeTM QX9650 Quad Core Processor (or equivalent model worth US$1,000). Also, the knowledge base entry with the highest cumulative community votes each month will receive a 100$ gift card. Limit one gift card per person.
All entries will be tested on a PC running Microsoft* Vista Ultimate 32 bit OS and DirectX®9.0c or DirectX® 10.1 with:
• Intel® Core™2 quad core processor
• 2GB DDR3 memory
• Single high end discrete GPU
To enter you must complete the on-line web contest registration form detailing your game abstract, and you must submit your entry electronically. All contestants must upload screenshots and/or movies of their game or application to the contest website by January 16, 2009. Visitors to the site can vote on the screenshots and movies as soon as the entry is uploaded. Official judging will take place after January 16, 2009 and the finalists (Category 1 only) will be notified on January 22, 2009. Intel reserves the right to pick alternate finalist entries if any of the chosen entries are deemed ineligible to compete for a category prize.
Finalists will be required to upload their executable program by January 16, 2009 for final judging. All physics knowledge base entries (Category 2) must be submitted by January 16, 2009 to qualify for the first and runner-up prize in this category. Winners will be notified, and winning entries will be announced publicly at the San Francisco Game Developers Conference on March 23-27, 2009.
