Both Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer and Intel® PTU use the same driver to sample events on your system. However, the two tools may not always use the same version of the driver. For this reason, conflicts can occur if they are both installed on the same system. If you want to have both tools installed (on either Windows* or Linux*), follow this process:
• Install the VTune analyzer first, then PTU.
• Each time you want to use the VTune analyzer, run the install_sep command under VTune\Analyzer\bin\.
• Each time you want to use PTU, run the command install_sep.exe under bin directory in the folder where PTU is installed.
This will ensure the appropriate driver is present before each tool is used.

Serching if there was any new release of PTU I found your thread. I did a small script for that:

Will these instructions apply to Vtune Amplifier XE? Thanks!
Hi user123,
Great question - actually, beginning with Intel(R) PTU 4.0 and Intel(R) VTune(TM) Amplifier 2011 XE, it is not necessary to load or unload drivers to switch back and forth between VTune and PTU. Both VTune Amplifier XE and PTU can be installed on the system and their drivers co-exist. The only limitation is that you cannot be collecting sampling data with both products at the same time.
Thanks,
Shannon
Hi Shannon,
Thanks for your prompt response! Actually, I am wondering if the drivers of an earlier version of PTU (3.2 update 1) and Vtune Amplifier 2011 XE can co-exist on the same system. I would like to measure i7 memory bandwidth as described in your article
http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/how-do-i-measure-memory-bandwidth-on-an-intel-core-i7-or-xeon-5500-series-platform-using-intel-vtune-performance-analyzer/
Many thanks in advance!
Hi again,
Yes, PTU 3.x and VTune Amplifier XE can co-exist on the same system. You do not need to load or unload the driver to switch between them. The only limitation is that you can't run data collections from both tools at once. The only co-existence issues are with having PTU 3.x (or older) and VTune 9.x (or older) on the same system.
Enjoy!
Thanks,
Shannon
