What is Intel AppUp® Creator beta?

Intel AppUp Creator beta is a web based app authoring tool that allows beginner and novice developers to easily and quickly create and publish Web and E-book applications (apps) in the Intel AppUp® Center.

What does ‘beta’ mean?

In software development, products are commonly released in ‘alpha’, ‘beta’, and ‘gold’ stages depending on the maturity of the product. Intel AppUp Creator is in its early release stage. The development team will be making continuous improvements based on user feedback.

Are programming skills needed to create apps using Intel AppUp Creator beta?

Intel AppUp Creator beta is designed to allow beginner and novice developers without any programming knowledge the ability to create and publish apps. For those developers who do have programming skills, code customization will be supported in future releases.

Is enrollment in the Intel® Developer Zone required to create apps with Intel AppUp Creator beta?

You do not need to enroll in the Intel Developer Zone to create apps with Intel AppUp Creator beta. However, to publish Web or E-book apps to the Intel AppUp center, you will need to enroll in the Intel Developer Zone.

Is a website or Web server needed to host the apps created using Intel AppUp Creator beta?

A website or Web server is not needed to host the apps created using Intel AppUp Creator beta. When the app is downloaded from the Intel AppUp Center, the code and resources that are automatically bundled within the app are installed on the device. However, if the app retrieves information from other websites, then the device running the app needs to be connected to the Internet.

Which Internet browsers does Intel AppUp Creator beta support?

Intel AppUp Creator beta can be used from the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer* (Version 9 or higher), Google Chrome* (Version 13 or higher), Firefox* (Version 6 or higher), and Safari* (Version 5.1 or higher).

Is there technical support for Intel AppUp Creator beta?

The development team and community is available to answer questions submitted through the Intel AppUp Creator Community Forum.


Web App

What is a Web Application (App)?

A Web app is an application that runs over the Internet. Typical Web apps are stored on Web servers and are accessed through Internet browsers. The Intel AppUp developer program’s definition of a Web app is an application created using Intel AppUp Creator beta that consolidates data and content from social media networks and other web sites of interest.

Why use Intel AppUp Creator beta over just making my own Web App?

Intel AppUp Creator beta provides users with little to no programming knowledge the ability to easily and quickly create, test, and publish a Web app. The Web app is simply created by dragging and dropping Web widgets and customizing them.

What is a Web Widget?

A Web widget is a small program that is a portal to Internet or local content. Intel AppUp Creator beta provides a selection of Web widgets for users to create a custom Web app for download in the Intel AppUp Center.

How to create a Web app using the Intel AppUp Creator beta?

Users create Web apps by dragging and dropping Web widgets and customizing them. Users then test and publish the Web app in the Intel AppUp center.

Can third party Web Widgets be imported into a Web App?

The feature to import third party Web widgets is not currently available in the Intel AppUp Creator beta, but will be supported in the future.


E-book App

What is an E-book App?

An E-book app is an electronic version of a document or manuscript with a built-in interactive reader which can be customized with various graphical user interface themes. Intel AppUp Creator beta will convert EPUB files into E-book apps and make them available in the Intel AppUp Center.

What is an EPUB file and how to turn a document into an EPUB file?

EPUB is a free and open E-book standard defined by the International Digital Publishing Forum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB). There are many free and commercially available EPUB tools for converting your document to the EPUB format. Intel AppUp Creator has been validated with the EPUB files converted by Calibre*, which can be downloaded for free from http://calibre-ebook.com/

How to create an E-book app using the Intel AppUp Creator beta?

After converting a document or manuscript into the EPUB format, users import their EPUB file into Intel AppUp Creator beta and customize it. Users then test and publish the E-book app in the Intel AppUp Center.

Will other file formats other than EPUB be supported by Intel AppUp Creator beta to create E-book apps?

Today Intel AppUp Creator beta supports EPUB files. In future releases, additional file formats will be supported to create E-book apps.
