Intel AppUp® Elements 2011 – Mobile Hackathon
Our first ever mobile hackathon is here! Code applications for the Intel AppUp center at 60mph for 36 hours to get your creativity flowing! Use this exciting experience as a fun way to get from San Francisco, California to Bellevue, Washington (and to meet other developers just like you) in time for Intel AppUp Elements!
Bring your own machine and development tools and get ready for an exciting ride. Apply for a seat on the bus at http://www.startupbus.com/challenges by September 15, 2011 by entering your email address in the “FIND OUT MORE:” area. Developers will be chosen for this opportunity based on the creativity of their entry and their ability to meet the Intel qualification requirements. All coding work must be completed within the 36 hour bus ride (September 26, 2011,10am PST through September 27, 2011,10pm PST), but preliminary preparation work like creation of graphics and logos or audio is allowed prior to the challenge. We recommend enrolling in the Intel AppUp® center beforehand at http://appdeveloper.intel.com, so you can download the SDKs and become familiar them. Ported apps and components are not eligible for this hackathon.
The Mobile Hackathon will begin on September 26, 2011 at 10am PST in San Francisco, California and end on September 27, 2011 at 10pm PST in Bellevue, Washington. All apps that are completed by 10pm PST on September 27, 2011 will be given an opportunity to create a short video demonstrating their app during Elements 2011. The 5 best apps will be chosen out of the completed apps and will win cash prizes. All participants will receive several items as a thank you for riding the bus and participating in the challenge, including an Intel® Atom™-based processor software development platform.

How to enter The Intel AppUp Elements Mobile Hackathon will begin on September 26, 2011 at 10am PST and will end on September 27, 2011 at 10pm PST. Thirty Elements attendees will be chosen to participate in this challenge based on the creativity of their entry at http://www.startupbus.com/challenges. Participants may only submit one application for this challenge. Download any of the SDKs offered on appdeveloper.intel.com and then create your application. To qualify for a prize, the entry must consist of an original application that is written using one of the SDKs offered at http://software.intel.com/en-us/appup. The SDKs contain instructions, documentation and all necessary tools to enable a participant to build an application for the Intel AppUp® center. Any entry that does not use one of the SDKs offered at http://software.intel.com/en-us/appup will not be able to qualify, except in the cases of open source applications and MeeGo applications. No SDK is required for open source applications and the MeeGo SDK is optional.

Prize(s) All participating developers in this challenge will receive a swag bag containing promotional items and an Intel® Atom™-based processor software development platform All participating apps that are complete by 10pm on September 27, 2011 will be given the opportunity to submit a video demonstrating their app for Elements attendees to watch and will be asked to participate in an Elements panel discussion on their experience during the mobile hackathon and will be eligible for the prizes. All apps must pass our validation process and be live in the Intel AppUp center catalog before October 20, 2011 at 11:59pm PST to receive the prize won. Prizes will be remediated on or before November 1, 2011.
On September 28, 2011 the 5 winners will be announced (and also notified via email) and will win:
First place winner: $3,000 USD
Second place winner: $2,500 USD

Spotlight: The winning applications are eligible for spotlight banner placement in the Intel AppUp center to help promote the winning application to consumers using the Intel AppUp center.

Highlight in the Intel AppUp catalog: The winner will be highlighted in the AppUp catalog to promote the winning application to consumers using the Intel AppUp center.

Demo opportunities: Selected developers may be offered the opportunity to demo their winning application at Intel developer events in 2011 and 2012.

Social Media exposure: Selected apps may be featured on our social media properties (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube).

Criteria of Winning Submission All coding work must be completed during the Intel AppUp Elements Mobile Hackathon. Preliminary prep work like creation of graphics, audio is allowed before the challenge. An application must be a new application and not a ported app. The application must be submitted to the Intel AppUp® center before September 27, 2011 at 10pm PST and must pass program validation to be eligible for prizes. The judges will evaluate all application submissions based on how well they deliver a compelling value proposition on a netbook and/or tablet based on an Intel® Atom™ processor. For example, an innovative user interface, a new usage model, a user experience designed for a mobile, always connected audience, and more.
Prize winners will be evaluated based on the criteria below. Intel reserves the right to not award prizes if, in the judges' discretion, no application submission meets the criteria below.

Quality and Functionality – Is the application fully functional and runs successfully on Intel® Atom™ processor based devices? Does the application demonstrate all the basic functionality expected from an app of this type? Does the application install easily with no issues and minimum amount of clicks, does it run without crashing? Do all links and features work? How appealing is the UI? On a 1-5 scale - baseline is 3 = meeting all basic functions; deduct point(s) if basic/expected function are not included. Add point(s) if advanced features exist.

Uniqueness – Does the application use established technology in unique way? Is it an advanced usage model we normally don’t see? Is it interacting with other devices/platforms? Baseline is 1 with points added for each positive trait.

Usability/Creativity – demonstrate superior user experience (UI, graphics, etc.) by leveraging latest technologies. How well is the application developed? Does the look and feel seem professional, is it easy to navigate and understand. Is the application responsive to inputs? Does it deliver the expected user experience? Judge based on look and feel, ease of use and responsiveness. Baseline is 1 with points added for each positive trait.

Market Potential – ability to fulfill consumers’ need/customer adoption. Is this an established title or idea? Does it have a following? Does it appeal to a large demographic or is it a niche app?

Bonus points – Is the app contextually aware? Does the application demonstrate augmented reality? Does the application provide a location based service? Does the application share/synchronize data across devices? Is it a multi-touch gaming application? 1 point for each "yes" answer.

These rules (including the Intel Privacy Policy and the Terms of Use) govern the Intel AppUp® Elements Mobile Hackathon skills contest (the “contest”) and set out the terms and conditions between Intel Corporation and its affiliates (“Intel” or “us/we”) and each participant (“participant” or “you”).

You are eligible to participate in the contest if you have registered with the:

You agree to submit contributions to the contest (“contributions”) under the following conditions:

Intel does not claim ownership of your contributions to the contest in form of sample code, content, videos, articles or any other contributions you submit.

By submitting your contributions, you are granting Intel and its affiliated companies the following worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, unconditional, fully paid-up rights:

to publicly perform or display, broadcast, transmit the contributions in whole or in part, for promotional and marketing purposes worldwide in any and all forms of media, whether now known or hereafter devised, and to distribute (directly or indirectly through multiple tiers) the contributions to Intel affiliates, its marketing agencies and to third parties for these purposes, and

to publish your name or alias in connection with this contest and your contributions for marketing and promotional purposes worldwide in any and all forms of media, whether now known or hereafter devised.

Your contributions to the contest will be available to other participants and to ensure they are safe and freely usable by other participants, you warrant that:

you own or otherwise have all rights necessary for you to provide the contributions and grant the rights described above and you do not disclose any information which would constitute a violation of a confidentiality obligation;

your contributions do not contain any viruses, worms, spyware, or other components or instructions that are malicious, deceptive, or designed to limit or harm the functionality of a computer; and

your contributions are not subject to license terms that require any software or documentation incorporating or being derived from your contributions to be licensed to others. d. You further agree and warrant that you shall not submit any contribution:

that is known by you to be false, inaccurate or misleading;

that infringes any third party's copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights or rights of publicity or privacy;

Apart from prizes offered as part of the contest, no monetary compensation will be paid for any of your contest contributions.

Intel is not responsible for contest entries not received due to lost, failed, delayed or interrupted connections or miscommunications, or other electronic malfunctions. Intel is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry information, whether caused by you or any other persons or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the contest.

You may be required to sign and return releases of liability, declarations of eligibility, and where lawful, publicity consent agreements, within five (5) days of acknowledged notification. If minors are allowed to enter and a prize is won by a minor, all required documentation must be signed by the parent/legal guardian. If a selected potential winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible (under these rules or due to a failure to comply with any of the other applicable policies, licenses, rules, and terms of service, fails to claim a prize, or fails to timely return the completed and executed releases/agreements as required), prize may be forfeited and an alternate potential winner may, at Intel’s discretion, be selected. Physical prizes awarded for the winning contributions will be given to participants or sent within six (6) weeks from the date of the notification email or confirmation of the winning participant’s physical address, whichever is later.

Prizes are personal to the participant submitting the winning contribution and cannot normally be transferred. All prizes are subject to availability and they may change at any time and Intel may award substitute prizes of equal or greater value. A cash alternative is not available. Odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible entries received.

The winner accepts responsibility for all federal, state and local taxes and fees in connection with the prizes. The winner shall be solely responsible to obtain all permissions and authorizations to collect and receive the prize in accordance with the laws of the participant’s country of residence. This contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law, and subject to applicable federal, state provincial and local laws. If the winner is a resident of a country in Latin America, cash prizes will be replaced by goods and/or services of equal value in Intel’s sole discretion.

Acceptance of the prize will constitute permission to use winner’s name and/or likeness for promotional purposes without further compensation except where prohibited by law.

Intel does not provide any warranty on the prizes. To the fullest extent allowable by law, Intel specifically disclaims any representations or warranties, express or implied, regarding the prizes, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose and implied warranties arising from course of dealing or course of performance.

We may, on notifying you, immediately suspend or terminate your rights, if you breach these rules or if we reasonably believe that you have submitted a contribution in violation of these rules.

Intel reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel the contest at any time for any reason.

You can withdraw your contribution at any time by notifying us. If a contribution is withdrawn your rights to win a prize in this contest are lost.

These rules apply to your contribution and the resources, unless we provide any items to you under more specific terms, in which case those more specific terms will apply to the relevant items. We may make changes to these rules at any time without notice to you. Contributing to the contest or accepting prizes will constitute acceptance of the revised rules.

Our only responsibilities with respect to the contest are set out in these rules. These rules prevail in the event of any conflict or inconsistency with any other communications, including advertising or promotional materials.

If Intel improperly denies you any prizes, Intel's entire liability and your sole and exclusive remedy will be limited to a distribution of the equivalent amount of prizes as set forth above. By participating in the contest, you waive any and all rights to bring any claim or action related to such matters in any forum beyond one (1) year after the first occurrence of the kind of act, event, condition or omission upon which the claim or action is based.

If for any reason this contest is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Intel which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this contest, Intel reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry or voting process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest.

Intel assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of entries. Intel is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or telephone lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Intel on account of technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the internet or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in this contest or downloading any materials in this contest.
