December 1st, 2009 A Quick and Easy Way to Parallelize a Legacy Codebase with Intel(R) Threading Building Blocks (Intel(R) TBB) - presented by Avid (Webinar)

Bernard Laberge, Senior Principal Engineer, Avid Learn how to overcome the limitations of a thread-based scheduler, including dealing with the absence of recursive parallelism support and the inefficient handling of unbalanced processing load. Bernard Laberge addresses how Avid resolved the expensive refactoring of their thread-based scheduler into a task-based solution by choosing Intel(R) Threading Building Blocks (Intel(R) TBB). He explores how Avid was able to easily integrate the Intel(R) TBB into their video editor applications and more than 5 million lines of code.

Intel Multi-Threading Workshop (Wokingham, Winnersh Triangle, England)
Participate in Intel’s full-day workshop about “how to get your code to run faster” and get an overview about how to analyze and log application performance. Many software developers are unaware that code can be written and manipulated to take best advantage of the underlying architectural features of the CPU. We show that by using such tools as Intel(R) VTune(TM) Performance Analyzer one can get a better picture of an application, and use that information to help optimize the code.

The first 10 registrants will get a book about multicore programming Threading Building Blocks. We will also run a raffle where the participants can win a Dual Core Notebook that will be handed out at end of the seminar.

December 15th, 2009 How to Use Intel(R) Parallel Studio to Streamline Code Development in a Multicore Environment - presented by SIMULIA (Webinar)

Matt Dunbar, Director for Performance Technology, SIMULIA Resolve elusive, costly multithreading errors quickly and efficiently with Intel(R) Parallel Studio. While many coding problems that lead to bugs in software applications are typically straightforward logic errors, errors in managing memory and in multithreading code can sometimes take weeks to months to diagnose and fix. Matt Dunbar explores how and why taking advantage of multicore processors through multithreaded code is critical for compute-intensive applications. While spotlighting his work on SIMULIA's Abaqus finite element solver, Dunbar addresses the need for multicore execution and shares his experiences using Intel(R) Parallel Studio to streamline code development in a multicore environment.

November 10th, 2009 Visual Effects for Animation - Presented by DreamWorks Animation (Webinar)

In this webinar, Ron Henderson will show examples of visual effects, from hair and feathers to smoke and fire, from a variety of DreamWorks Animation feature films. He will discuss in general terms the kinds of techniques used to achieve particular visual effects. Finally, Henderson will show a detailed breakdown of the dam-breaking scene from Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, demonstrating how different elements of key frame animation, simulation, and rendering are combined in a real production shot.

October 27th, 2009 Real World Parallelism: Refactoring Legacy Code and Implementing Concurrency - presented by Cadence Design Systems (Webinar)

Speaker: John Schiavone, Senior Member of Consulting Staff, Cadence Design Systems Cadence Allegro's complex Design Rules Checking (DCR) process is used to verify that designs meet constraint requirements. Development is currently underway to improve the performance of the DRC process using multithreading. October 13th, 2009 Beyond 'Thinking' Parallel: How to Choose the Right Parallel Programming Model (Webinar)

Speaker: James Reinders, Director and Chief Evangelist, Intel(R) Software Development Products Learn how to pick the right parallel programming method, and why a combination is likely to be the most effective approach. Many parallelism models have been proposed, but only a few will succeed. In addition to discussing how to identify the winners, James Reinders proposes that there are three classes of parallel programming abstractions, and why it is perfectly reasonable to use all three in the same program code. A 30-minute overview will provide insight into and options for tackling parallelism through these models, followed by a 20-minute Q&A.
