Intel Architecture Platform Terminology for Development Tools

Intel® compilers and libraries support three platforms: general combinations of processor architecture and operating system type. This section explains the terms that Intel uses to describe the platforms in its documentation, installation procedures and support site. Note: not all Intel software development tools support all three platforms.

IA-32 Architecture refers to systems based on 32-bit processors generally compatible with the Intel Pentium® II processor, (for example, Intel® Pentium® 4 processor or Intel® Xeon® processor), or processors from other manufacturers supporting the same instruction set, running a 32-bit operating system.

Intel® 64 Architecture (formerly Intel® EM64T)refers to systems based on IA-32 architecture processors which have 64-bit architectural extensions, (for example, Intel® Core™2 processor family), running a 64-bit operating system such as Microsoft Windows Vista* x64 or a Linux* "x86_64" variant. If the system is running a 32-bit operating system, then IA-32 architecture applies instead. Systems based on AMD* processors running a 64-bit operating system are also supported by Intel compilers for Intel® 64 architecture applications.

64-bit computing on Intel architecture requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel® 64 architecture. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations. Consult with your system vendor for more information.

IA-64 Architecture refers to systems based on the Intel® Itanium® processor running a 64-bit operating system.

What software must already be installed?
Before installing Intel® Intel Thread Profiler onto Microsoft Windows*, you must have the
VTune™ Performance Analyzer v7.1, or higher, already installed, as Intel Thread Profiler is a plugin to the VTune™ environment. Information on obtaining the VTune Performance Analyzer can be obtained from the
Intel® Threading Tools web site. You must also have the following already installed:

Microsoft Visual* C++ v6.0 or higher

Microsoft* Internet Explorer v6.0 or higher

Note: To use the Linux* Remote Data Collector (Remote Agent), you must also install Intel Thread Profiler on a Microsoft Windows* system.

Installing a New Version Over an Already Installed Version
To install a new version of Intel Thread Profiler onto Microsoft Windows*, you should first uninstall the currently installed version.

Note: Before removing Intel Thread Profiler from Windows*, you might want to save your projects using
File » Pack and Go menu in the VTune™ environment.

To remove the currently installed version from Windows*, go to
Start » Control Panel » Add or Remove Programs » Intel Thread Profiler.

To remove the currently installed version from Linux*, run
uninstall32.sh or
uninstall64.sh which is typically found in the
/opt/intel/itt directory.

Integration with Microsoft .NET* Developer Environment
How do I get Intel Thread Profiler to install into the Microsoft .NET* Developer Environment? You may already have this integration. Check in the .NET* Developer Environment by right-clicking in the menu area and be sure that the
VTune™ Performance Tools menu is enabled. If you don't see
VTune™ Performance Tools in the list, then follow these steps:

Install Microsoft .NET* Developer Environment before installing VTune Performance Analyzer. If VTune Performance Analyzer must be uninstalled, then uninstall Intel Thread Profiler first.

When installing VTune Performance Analyzer,
select integration with the Microsoft .NET Developer Environment when prompted by a dialog.

Note: Integration with the Microsoft .NET Developer Environment is not a default installer option, so you must select it.

Install Intel Thread Profiler. The Intel Thread Profiler installer will default to integration with the Microsoft .NET Developer Environment, because VTune™ Performance Analyzer is already integrated.

General Installation Tips for Windows*

To install a new version of Intel Thread Profiler onto Microsoft Windows*, you should first uninstall the current version. Before removing Intel Thread Profiler, you might want to save your projects using

Microsoft Visual* C++ Developer Studio* or Microsoft .NET Developer Environment should not be started (open or running) when you install Intel Thread Profiler. But these should be installed before installing Intel Thread Profiler.

Close any Intel® Compiler command-prompt (DOS*) windows before installing Intel Thread Profiler.

As with the VTune™ Performance Analyzer product, you must have local (system) administrator rights to install and use this product.
