Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer for Windows* - Microsoft* Visual Studio* is slow even after uninstalling the VTune analyzer

Recent reports of Visual Studio starting up slowly after integrating the VTune analyzer, even after the VTune analyzer has been uninstalled and un-integrated, have been confirmed. We are investigating a solution and will provide one as soon as we can.

The first course of action is to attempt the following:

Install the VTune analyzer for Windows version 9.0 Update 3 with integration into Microsoft Visual Studio*.

Using Add/Remove Programs, un-integrate the VTune analyzer from Visual Studio by:

selecting
Change,

then
Modify,

in the
Custom Setup dialog, choose to not make the
Visual Studio integration available.

If Visual Studio is still slow to start up, the following steps may provide a workaround. Please only use these steps if you are comfortable with editing the system registry.

Determine if the follow files are present:

VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/Analyzer/bin/AnalyzerPkg.dll
VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/Shared/bin/VpePkg.dll
VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/tcheck/Bin/TCVS_Plug.dll
VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/tprofile/Bin/TPVS_Plug.dll

If they are not present, manually copy them from the extracted install package directory (i.e.,
C:Program FilesIntelDownloadw_vt_p_9.0.016, by default).

Set the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREIntel CorporationVTune(TM) Performance Environment6.0InstallInfoIntegrateProduct
xFlag to 2, where
x is 1, 2, and 3.

Change directory (cd) to VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/Analyzer/bin/ and execute
Regsvr32 /u AnalyzerPkg.dll

cd to VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/Shared/bin/ and
Regsvr32 /u VpePkg.dll

cd to VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/tcheck/Bin/ and
Regsvr32 /u TCVS_Plug.dll

cd to VTUNE_INSTALL_DIR/tprofile/Bin/ and
Regsvr32 /u TPVS_Plug.dll

Run '
devenv /setup' and wait for the process devenv.exe to finish. Use Windows Task Manager to monitor the process.

Run Visual Studio and verify faster start up.

It those steps don't help, try the following:

Create the file vs-clean.reg with the following content (i.e., between the horizontal lines):

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftVisualStudio8.0InstalledProductsVTune(TM) Performance Analyzer]

Apply changes by double-clicking on this file in Windows Explorer.

Finally, open a Command Prompt, change the current folder to
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDE and run "
devenv.exe /setup", waiting for the process devenv.exe to complete. Use Windows Task Manager to monitor.

Symptom(s):

The VTune™ Performance Analyzer identifies your DLL as a system DLL. As a result, only exported functions are instrumented.

Cause:

The DLL is located in a address that the VTune analyzer recognizes as a system address. System address ranges are set as follows:

IA-32:
0x58000000 - 0xFFFFFFFF
Intel(R) 64:
0x0000000070000000 - 0x000000007FFFFFFF
0x000006FB50000000 - 0x000006FB7FFFFFFF

Solution:

Currently, there are two work-arounds available:

Change the
/BASE:
nnn option of the relevant linker session to set value
nnn out of the range.

Run
link /edit /rebase:base=
nnn userdll.dll to change the base address of the DLL to a value
nnn which is out of the system address range.

This issue may be resolved in a future release of the VTune analyzer. At that time, this page will be updated with the release information.

Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer for Windows* - Sampling data may look incorrect

Symptom(s):
Sampling data may look incorrect.

Solution:
There are three potential reasons for this: event skid, sampling limitations, and the system idle process.

Event skid always exists and it is what is causing you to see the results that you obtained. Event skid is caused primarily by 2 factors:

The processor interrupts are received at the end of an instruction's execution at which time the program counter (or EIP/instruction pointer) is pointing to the next instruction, and...

The out-of-order execution done within the processor's core. Since programs do not execute in order due to branches and jumps, there is no way to just back up one instruction.

Sampling is just an approximate count of the number of events around a location. You cannot accurately determine the exact number of events by using sampling. Sampling is not counting.

The system idle process runs when the CPU is waiting for a task or process. The samples are placed in the kernel (system idle process) and are usually, but no always, near the HALT instruction. A good view of the system idle process is on the Modules report: select "Process View" then view "By Process".

When using the Intel® VTune™ Analyzer, you should be lookingfor the regions of your program that are consuming the most time, i.e.,have the most events. Those locations are the hotspots and that is where you should spend time improving the performance of your application. If you have lots of system idle time, it means that you have suspended threads and/or processes and you should improve the efficiency of your threading and semaphore logic.
