Level Up 2010, Intel® Visual Adrenaline Game Demo Challenge
Official Rules
Contest Description
Level Up 2010, Intel® Visual Adrenaline Game Demo Challenge, is a worldwide competition providing developers greater exposure to the gaming community and a chance to win exciting prizes. There are two phases to the entry process in 2010—bringing more opportunities to win prizes and to show game ideas and demo versions of your applications to the wider gaming community, the renowned judges, and the Intel® Visual Adrenaline experts.
In the first phase, submissions in the form of “game concepts”, comprising a game description with optional screen shots and/or videos, will be accepted from professionals, hobbyists, and student game developers from March 29, 2010 through June 21, 2010. Pre-qualified finalists will be selected from the pool of game concept entries. All entrants, as well as the pre-qualified finalists, can submit demo versions of your gaming applications and abstracts to be considered for prizes in both main contest and Judge’s Choice categories.
• Professional/hobbyist game concepts will be judged bi-monthly by designated Intel Community Managers to select pre-qualified finalists. Pre-qualified finalists will be notified by July 11, 2010.
• Student game concepts will be selected as pre-qualified finalists in one random drawing per student block (see student block dates in these rules).
In the second phase, entrants submit demo versions of your gaming applications and abstracts by September 30, 2010 (Professional Entries)/October 15, 2010 (Student Entries) (revised from the original dates of August 31, 2010). These will be judged in three main contest categories: Best Game for a Desktop, Best Game for a Laptop, and Best Game for a Netbook. Additional prizes will be awarded for the following “Judge’s Choice” categories: (1) Best Art Design, (2) Best Graphics Performance, (3) Best Sound Design, and (4) Best Character Design.
Criteria
Level Up 2010, Intel® Visual Adrenaline Game Demo Challenge has prizes based on the utilization of the features of Intel®-based platforms. Intel Community Manager selections will determine the ten finalists in each of the following categories. For final judging, a panel of Intel and game industry judges will review finalists and grade them according to the criteria below.
Category Information
Best Game for a Desktop
Entries in the “Best Game for a Desktop” category will be scored based on frames per second, thread scaling, and use of available cores to enhance the user experience via physics, artificial intelligence, or perceptible improvements. Innovative uses of the extra processing cores will be rewarded. Entries competing in the Best Game for a Desktop category will have their frame rate speed-up measured from two- to four-cores when running at resolutions up to 1920x1200, with and without Intel® Hyper Threading Technology active. A minimum target of 30 frames per second is recommended.
Entries competing in the Best Threaded Game category must install and run on a Microsoft* Vista Ultimate 32-bit operating software and DirectX* 9.0c or DirectX* 10.1 software with:
• Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme processor QX9650 OR Intel® Core™ i7 processor
• Intel® X38 or X48 based Chipset
• 2GB DDR3-1333 memory in 2x1GB configuration
• ATI* Radeon HD3870 OR NVIDIA* 9800 GX2 graphic card
Best Game for a Laptop
Laptops provide special challenges and opportunities for games. Entries in this category will demonstrate features unique to the mobile gamer by leveraging the Intel Laptop Gaming TDK. Power and connectivity monitoring, platform changes, or peer-to-peer ad-hoc networking demonstrates a mobile-aware entry. Scores will be based on how well the mobile features are demonstrated. A minimum target of 15 to 20 frames per second is recommended. Entries competing in the Best Game for a Laptop category will be evaluated on a default Microsoft* Windows* XP operating system installation with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and DirectX* 9.0c software on a Lenovo* ThinkPad* T43 laptop with an ATI* Mobility Radeon* x300 graphics card. The Intel Laptop Gaming TDK version 2.1 will also be installed.
Best Game for a Netbook
The netbook form factor and the gaming habits of netbook users are unique within the gaming market. Entries in this category will demonstrate a compelling value proposition on a netbook. Innovative user interface; user experience designed for a mobile, always connected audience; uniqueness of application concept; quality; and visual appeal demonstrate a netbook-aware entry. Scores will be based on how well the netbook features are demonstrated.
Finalist entries competing in the Best Game for a Netbook category will be required to join the Intel® Atom Developer Program (at no cost to the contestant) and complete the validation process outlined in the Intel AppUp℠ center. Utilization of the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program Software Development Kit (SDK) will be required to submit a market-ready application for validation. The SDK currently supports C/C++ apps for Windows* and Moblin™-based operating systems. Entries completing the validation process will also be able to sell their applications in the Intel AppUp™ store after the winning entries are announced.
Judging Criteria
Judges will evaluate each finalist in the three categories (“Best Game for a Desktop, Best Game for a Laptop, Best Game for a Netbook) in the areas of:
• Achieving Category Requirements – requirements as noted in the category descriptions
• Game Play - consistency in game experience and user interface
• Originality - integration of new and unique game concepts
• Production Readiness – completeness of game elements for final production
Judge’s Choice Awards
Win recognition for the unique elements of your demo version of your gaming application. In addition to the three “Best Game for a …” categories described above, finalists will be asked to select one (1) Judge’s Choice category for additional prize consideration.
The categories for additional consideration are the specialty areas of Best Art Design, Best Graphics Performance, Best Sound Design, and Best Character Design. You may be required to sign and return releases of liability, declarations of eligibility, and where lawful, publicity consent and promotion agreements, within five (5) days of acknowledged notification. If a selected potential winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible (under these rules or due to a failure to comply with any of the other applicable policies, licenses, rules, and terms of service, fails to claim a prize, or fails to timely return the completed and executed releases/agreements as required), prizes may be forfeited and an alternate potential winner may, at Intel’s discretion, be selected. Physical prizes awarded for the winning entries will be sent to participants within twelve (12) weeks from the date of the notification email or confirmation of the winning participant’s physical address, whichever is later.
15. Prizes are personal to the participant submitting the winning contribution and cannot normally be transferred. All prizes are subject to availability and they may change at any time and Intel may award substitute prizes of equal or greater value. Except in those specified instances where USD cash is awarded, cash alternatives are not available.
16. The winner accepts responsibility for all federal, state and local taxes and fees in connection with the prizes. The winner shall be solely responsible to obtain all permissions and authorizations to collect and receive the prize in accordance with the laws of the participant’s country of residence. This contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law, and subject to applicable federal, state provincial and local laws. If the winner is a resident of a country in Latin America, cash prizes will be replaced by goods and/or services of equal value in Intel’s sole discretion.
17. Intel does not provide any warranty on the prizes. To the fullest extent allowable by law, Intel specifically disclaims any representations or warranties, express or implied, regarding the prizes, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose and implied warranties arising from course of dealing or course of performance.
18. Intel may, on notifying participants, immediately suspend or terminate their rights, if there is a breach of these rules or if Intel reasonably believes, at its own discretion, that participants have submitted a contribution in violation of these rules.
19. Participants can withdraw their contribution at any time by notifying Intel. If a contribution is withdrawn all rights to win a prize in this contest are lost.
20. These rules apply to participant’s contribution(s) and the resources, unless Intel provides any items to participants under more specific terms, in which case those more specific terms will apply to the relevant items. Intel may make changes to these rules at any time without notice to participants. The most current version of the rules can be reviewed on the Intel® Software Network website. Contributing to the contest or accepting prizes will constitute acceptance of the revised rules.
21. Intel’s only responsibilities with respect to the contest are set out in these rules. These rules prevail in the event of any conflict or inconsistency with any other communications, including advertising or promotional materials.
22. For any feedback or questions regarding the contest or the prizes, please contact Intel by sending a letter, an email (isn.support@intel.com) or by participating in the contest discussion forum.
