Licensing: Setting up the client for a floating license

June 20, 2010 12:00 AM PDT

This article applies to customers who have the Intel Software Product with floating license. It provides the steps on setting up the client license before installing the product.

There are three methods to set up the client license:

Method #1
- use the exact license as the floating license used on the Intel FLEXlm* license server.

If you choose to use this method, you do not need to have the FLEXlm server running when installing the product.

Method #2 -  create a text file with file extension ".lic" and following data:

SERVER <server-name1> <hostid1> <port1>
SERVER <server-name2> <hostid2> <port2> //comment: needed for multiple servers only
SERVER <server-name3> <hostid3> <port3> //comment: needed for multiple servers only
USE_SERVER

The server-name, hostid and port number information can be found in the floating license file. You can save this text file to a temporary directory or to the directory where "INTEL_LICENSE_FILE" points to.

The default license folder for Intel Software Products is as below:

  • On Windows*:     [Program Files]\Common files\Intel\Licenses\
  • On Linux*:          /opt/intel/licenses/
  • On MAC OS* X:   /Users/Shared/Library/Application Support/Intel/Licenses

This method requires the FLEXlm server running first in order to use it for installation.

Method #3 - set the environment variable "INTEL_LICENSE_FILE" with value "port#@host"

Setting environment variables is different on Windows or Linux* or Mac OS* X. Please see this article How to set INTEL_LICENSE_FILE Environment Variable for steps.
The server-name and port number information can be found in the floating license file.

This method does NOT require the FLEXlm server running when installing the product.

After the client license file is created, you can use it to install the Intel Software Product or replace your evaluation license by copying the license file to the directory that "INTEL_LICENSE_FILE" points to.

Now the product is ready for use with the client license.
