There is currently no charge for this service; it is available online through the Intel Software Network at paralleluniverse.intel.com.

A Quick Overview of the New Intel Parallel Universe Portal

Test software performance and scalability without having larger multicore systems in-house. Upload your executable and review parallelism performance using only your browser.

Cloud-based analysis at no charge. Nothing to download or install - quick and easy. Service provided over a trusted, internet connection.

Get parallelism tuning guidance specific to your software.

Measure Application Scalability Without Requiring a Test System In-House

While quad-core processors are commonplace, it is less common to have a sixteen thread system available to test the scalability of a threaded application. Intel Parallel Universe makes it easy for developers to find out how well their threaded application scales as the number of processing cores increase by testing on a system that is larger than most developers have access to otherwise. There is currently no charge for this service, which supports 32-bit Windows applications.

Easy to Use, Trusted, Browser Based Scalability Testing

There's no special application build required, nothing to install, there's not even any cost to run the test. Developers can use their favorite Internet browser including Internet Explorer*, Firefox*, Safari*, or Chrome* to run the test and interpret the results. Intel Parallel Universe uses a trusted, Internet connection provided by the Intel® Software Network. It is a straightforward three-step process to test the scalability of an application.

Upload Zip file of application along with execution command & arguments.

The application goes into queue. Each test run gets the entire system resources for accurate scaling information.

Scaling results are reported in easy to read tables and charts. Save results for later analysis and comparison.

Best with Intel® Parallel Studio

Any development tool can be used to build applications analyzed with this service; it is not required that Intel compilers or the Intel Parallel Studio be used to create the application. Intel Parallel Studio provides capabilities to tune and optimize applications to get the most accurate picture of the scaling potential of the program. Evaluation copies of Intel Parallel Studio can be downloaded at http://intel.com/go/parallel. Applications build with trial copies of Parallel Studio can be analyzed with the Intel Parallel Universe Portal.

Feedback Welcome

Join the Forums on the Intel Parallel Programming Community on the Intel Software Network to discuss the current service to offer feedback and provide input on future enhancements to the service.

Intel Parallel Universe is available to software developers on the Intel® Software Network at http://paralleluniverse.intel.com.

Learn More

Tune into the Intel Software Network TV live from Supercomputing 2009 in Portland Oregon to hear more about the launch.

Event Master of Ceremonies: Bill Pearson (@billpearson)
Title: "Introduction to Developer Ignite 2"

Submitter: Alan Dayley (@dayleyagile)
Title: "The True Measure of Agile"
Abstract: The Agile wave is washing over the software development world and lapping at the shores of all creative endeavors. There are buzzwords, expensive software and training consultants a-plenty! What does it really mean to be Agile, with a capital "A"? If you have daily stand-up meetings and iterations, are you Agile or just covering old ways in trendy veneer. Iterations or not, you are Agile ONLY if your actions support the principles of the Agile Manifesto. Let's take a quick look at the practical implications of THE yard stick of Agility. If your actions support this powerful statement of human interaction, you are Agile, even if your daily "stand up" involves chairs!

Submitter: Tomasz Stechly (@tstechly)
Title: "The Benefits of Immutability"
Abstract: Impact of immutable data on unit testing, debugging, and concurrency.

Submitter: Saul Mora (@casademora)
Title: "Refactoring Databases"
Abstract: Just like your code, your data model can and should be refactored. Don't let the big scary gremlins talk you out of cleaning out the cruft from your database every so often. Your users will thank you for it.

Submitter: Derek Neighbors (@dneighbors)
Title: "Location, Location, Location - It's Not Just a Real Estate Mantra Anymore"
Abstract: Global Positioning System (GPS) has been around for fifty years, but with the rise of GPS enabled mobile platform it has just started to gain real traction. The Internet allowed for easy global commerce and communication, but GPS enabled mobile devices are bring back the emphasis of local. There is so much data available to us that localizing it helps make it manageable. If you are developing applications today you need to understand the value of location.

Submitter: Leo Godin (@leogodin217)
Title: "Keep Your Apps, I Want A Solution"
Abstract: Corporate American and the Internet are inundated with stand alone applications and tools. These tools mostly fall short in that they are not part of a solution. They are stand alone tools with no connection to the surrounding infrastructure. These tools often have no support model and no useful documentation/training. As such, these tools often fall into disuse and obscurity. What makes this common problem so frustrating is that it does not take much more work to provide a solution than it does to provide an application. With a little more effort your applications can move from being viewed as utilities to being part of vital business critical solutions.

Submitter: Nick Crohn (@ohnomisterbill)
Title: "JavaScript: Not Just for Noobs Anymore"
Abstract: JavaScript is the outcast of the programming world, but it has so much more power than developers give it and more usefulness than designers know what to do with. The trick is writing "transparent JavaScript."
Keep it simple and you can write good JavaScript that is efficient, non-intrusive and functional. You get the "flashiness", the SEO, and a great site that just works.

Submitter: Drew LeSueur (@drewlesueur)
Title: "Hooked on Web Hooks"
Abstract: Webhooks jail break web apps to make them more programmable. Simple put, they are a pattern of enabling user defined HTTP callbacks in web applications. My talk will talk about why they are important, what problems they solve, and how they will change the world.

Submitter: Chris Conrey (@conrey)
Title: "Dogfood, Itches, and Other Reasons To Write Software for You"
Abstract: Rather than trying to build something for everyone - the best software pieces have often been developed in house as a way to solve the team or the developer's own problem. Odds are if you have a problem, there are several other people who have the same problem but not the means to make it happen. In 5 minutes I'll explain why you should scratch your own itch, eat your own dogfood, and let the rest of the world come to you.

Submitter: James Abel (@jamesabel)
Title: "Crowd Sourcing Platform Feature Research Data"
Abstract: Knowing what platform configurations and features are (or are not) used is very valuable when determining what your software can assume will be on a platform, and if a particular platform has enough of a market presence to justify porting to. In this talk, I will go over a system that has been created to automatically survey platform data, such as disk space, DRAM, operating system, number and type of processors, supported instruction sets, etc.. I will discuss the client-side data collector and server-side RESTful interface and its (rudimentary) graphing capability of the collected data.

Submitter: remi Taylor (@remitaylor)
Title: "Bleeding Edge Application Deployment (that doesn't suck)"
Abstract: Deployment doesn't have to be painful. In fact, deployment should be something that application developers don't even have to think about! If you think that creating a virtual server and running automated configuration scripts is "easy," then you don't know what you're missing out on!

Submitter: Barry Stahl (@bsstahl)
Title: "AZGiveCamp - Geeks Giving Back to the Community"
Abstract: AZGiveCamp is a massive weekend event where the software development community comes together to support charities and non-profits by developing or improving their web sites and applications. It's fun, it's agile, it's geeky, and it's good for the community. This talk will provide a brief history of GiveCamps, and then explore the technical aspects of what can be accomplished in one crazy weekend.

Submitter: Clayton Lengel-Zigich (@claytonlz)
Title: "Age-Old Solutions to Everyday Problems"
Abstract: While nearly 2,500 years old, Aesop's fables still pack a potent punch of prudent practicality. These tales from Ancient Greece contain advice and guidance for everyday software engineering problems, pitfalls and predicaments. Learn how you can use this age-old wisdom to progress past your plodding professional peers.

Social Media Release

Alpha SDK Release Gives Developers a Jump Start at Writing Netbook Applications for the Intel® AtomTM Developer Program

At the Intel Developer Forum, Intel announced a new opportunity for developers to earn money by writing netbook applications via the Intel® Atom Developer Program community, and selling their applications through future application stores. Developers were told to look for a software development kit (SDK) to help them develop applications and components for netbooks.

Starting today, developers can get a jump start to their application development using an alpha version of the Intel Atom Developer Program Software Development Kit for both Microsoft* Windows (C and C++) and Moblin (C). Additional runtimes and development languages will be supported in future releases of the SDK.

The features of the alpha SDK include authorization, crash reporting, and a consumer store client emulator for testing. A developer can test and debug today and then when the beta SDK is available later this year they can submit their applications or components and take full advantage of the program's revenue-generating opportunities, when the app stores start opening in early 2010.

A video walkthrough of the SDK is available.

Developers can join the Intel Atom Developer Program at http://appdeveloper.intel.com and download the alpha version of the SDK. The site also contains additional documentation. The $99 USD annual program membership fee is waived for a limited time.

Get your Questions Answered & Provide Input for Future SDK Releases:

With the SDK, we are launching a SDK Developer Forum for Q&A moderated by the primary architects and developers of the SDK. This is the best place for developers to ask questions, and provide input directly to Intel engineers for future releases.

Also don't forget to check out the... Intel Atom Developer Challenge

Developers who submit their apps and have them successfully validated will be able to enjoy a range of exciting rewards. For example, the first 100 validated apps will receive a tricked out netbook, and the talented developers with the most innovative application & elegant application design will win all-expense-paid "rock star treatment" trip to GDC 2010!
Intel® Cloud Builder program launched

For those of you implementing the infrastructure of a cloud, often called IaaS or Infrastructure as a Service, one of the challenges can be “where to start?”. With the myriad of hw options and variety of software solutions finding a starting point can be daunting.

For example:

· What server configurations are optimal?

· How to structure the network?

· What is the optimal storage configuration?

· I really don't want to write this software , therefore, what is the cloud management stack that best suits my needs?

Assuming that cost reduction and/or agility are the reasons you are building a cloud (true for the vast majority of customers), then there is huge benefit from using a largely homogenous architecture: identical server, network, storage, and management configurations across the cloud implementation. This architecture addresses the maintenance aspects of the infrastructure (remove from service if it fails, replace when enough are out of service to justify a visit to the data center) as well as the operational aspect (no special cases). Getting to the point where workloads can be hosted in this environment requires effort but has a fairly quick payback once you complete the transition.

Even with this in mind, you still have to design the hardware infrastructure and then select a set of management tools.

Intel recognizes this need and has formed the Intel Cloud Builder program to help in this ‘getting started’ phase. If you are already well down the road to building a cloud, you will likely find the output from this program useful to understand the options available in the market.

Intel(r) Cloud Builder is a fairly simple program with a powerful output:

* using a defined hardware blueprint,

* using a cloud management software stack,

Intel® WS-Management Translator

Introduction

Beginning with Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) release 3.0, Intel introduced support for the industry standard WS-Management protocol. This allows management software to use a combination of standard CIM classes, as well as Intel specific classes, to perform Intel® AMT operations. Support for the WS-Management specification enables software developers and IT professionals to leverage off-the-shelf infrastructure and tools to interact with Intel® AMT platforms. But what about using WS-Management based software in conjunction with Intel® AMT platforms older than release 3.0? Intel has shipped many platforms that can only support a firmware version of 2.6 or below. Can WS-Management based software be used with these older Intel platforms?

Enter the Translator

The Intel® WS-Management Translator makes it possible for WS-Management based software to be used in conjunction with Intel® AMT platforms older than version 3.0. Using the translator, management software can send WS-Management commands to the translator, the translator will in turn perform the equivalent operation on an Intel® AMT device using a proprietary SOAP based protocol understood by all Intel® AMT platforms.

Genscript

Genscript is a tool for activating Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) features in a scriptable environment. Genscript generates Visual Basic® scripts that can be applied to a single machine or many machines. These scripts programmatically can activate various Intel AMT features using Windows Remote Management (WinRM). Genscript can also be used in conjunction with the Intel WS-Management Translator to perform initial setup of Intel AMT clients and programmatically activate features on AMT clients that don’t natively support WinRM. Intel AMT clients that are already setup, and natively support the WS-Management interface, will not require the assistance of the Intel WS-Management translator software.
