Why develop for N-cores?

Show #47 Original Air Date: 9/15/2009 8:00 AM Pacific Time
The Threading Methodology used at Intel has four major steps: Analysis, Design & Implementation, Debugging, and Performance Tuning. These steps are used to create a multithreaded application from a serial base code. Multithreaded programming is still more art than science. This show will gives 8 Simple Rules that you can add to your palette of threading design methods. By following these rules, you will have more success in writing the best and most efficient threaded implementation of your applications. We will also be discussing Parallel Programming Resources and tools available on Intel.com to support your parallel application development.

More about Parallel Programming Talk
Parallel Programming Talk
Every Tuesday at 8:00AM PST (16:00GMT). You can also watch live shows or on demand video replays of our on ISN TV. Since July of 2008 Aaron Tersteeg, the Intel Software Network Parallel Programming and Multi-Core community manager has been talking about Parallel Programming every other week at 8:00AM PST.

What started out as a fun idea has ramped into a growing community of interest. The format is simple; a few news announcements followed by a brief conversation about parallel programming tools, technology or application. Guest on the show have included Microsoft, Interactive Supercomputing, Axceleon, Intel Engineers and Academics.

The whole show runs 30min and is recorded over a phone line, simple enough to have anyone in the world as a guest on the show. The show streams live using the free Blog Talk Radio network and is available for replay or download via Intel.com and iTunes.

Reflecting on how things got started Aaron states, "Earlier this year our team was challenged with finding an innovative and low cost way to get our message out to a broader audience. I had heard about Josh Hilliker and other podcasters success with Open Port Radio and thought that I would give it a try. I've been delighted with the results and the growing level of interest."

One of Aaron's early concerns about getting the show going was how broad the area of Parallel Programming can be. Two key partners to ensuring that the conversations maintained a high level of technical merit were Dr. Clay Breshears and Dr. Michael Wrinn from the Intel Software College.

"The show would have not been the same without Clay co-host for the first set of shows and Michael joining me recently. No matter who we had on as a guest, having these two luminaries to back me up ensured that the listens were getting accurate and concise information." says a grateful Aaron.

The January show on Real World Haskell with author Don Stewart received over 2000 listeners. "We were really amazed to see that so many people were interested in learning more about functional languages." reflect Aaron. The Parallel Programming Talk show went weekly starting on January 6th.

The first show of every month we are dedicating to listener questions. Send in your questions to parallelprogrammingtalk@intel.com and tune in to listen to which ones we pick.
