Setup and configuration required for Small Medium Business

Intel® AMT RDK is based on SDK and Intel® AMT. For AMT to function correctly, AMT requires correct setup. User can change AMT Setup by entering into BIOS (Ctrl-S). Esssentially AMT support two mode of operation : Small Medium Business and Enterprise Mode. In this blog, we will see what kind of setup is required for Small Medium Business (SMB) mode of AMT.

There is another twist to AMT : static / DHCP. Again AMT subsystem can be configured to either use static IP address or obtain IP address from DHCP server. That makes two possibilities for each of the operating mode (Small Medium Business Mode, Enterprise Mode) of AMT.

Small Medium Business (SMB) mode is made to be used by small & medium businesses. Once user entered in BIOS (ME (Managebility Engine - AMT engine) BIOS Setup), user can decide to change administrator passsword. User can specify network parameteres via. ME BIOS setup. User can specify hostname. Then user to sepcify : IPV4 parameters such as Static/DHCP. If user specified 'static' , then user need to specify static IP address, subnet & mask, gateway address, etc... Static IP address has to be different from host IP address (OS TCP/IP IP address ). Is is required because AMT uses different MAC address in case of static IP addresses, so required to have dedicated IP address which has to be different host IP address to avoid routing problems. SImilarly if decide to use DNS, then AMT subsystem's hostname ( which also needs to be different from host DNS name) needs to registered with DNS server manually.

For DHCP network node, AMT subsystem will share IP address with host OS's IP address. In that case, hostname of AMT subsystem has to be same as host OS's DNS name for name resolution to take place correctly since AMT subsystem and host OS share IP address. Once all these required setup steps are performed for AMT, make sure to save those BIOS setting and issue a reboot.

RDK is expected to function properly if BIOS setup changes are completed.

thanx a lot. it helped me troubleshoot my system and setp AMT.

Though, there are several complexities involved in ATM implementations and sometimes it happens that very minor and easy point doesn't get in your mind like DHCP server which itself assigns the IP to ATM and this is what in a network I just missed out because none of the boxes was assigned IP's by DHCP and it was some script which messed up all configuration.
Anyways, its a good post and reminds me of some tips.

Thanks. It would be nice to clarify a term what a small or medium business is.
