Intel ME Interface (HECI) now available for Linux

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the first technology preview of Linux software drivers for the Intel ME Interface (previously known as HECI) enabling communication between the local host operating system and the Intel® AMT Management Engine.

You can find the new driver and additional information about it, here: http://www.openamt.org/

The current open-source release has 2 major components, the HECI Linux kernel driver and LMS (Local Manageability Service). At the moment only the HECI driver is available for download, LMS will follow shortly.

If you have been using the AMT Software Development Kit to manage Linux systems remotely, now you will be able to do the same from locally using LMS.

Within the new driver package are sources which we plan to submit for kernel inclusion as well as scripts for creating the required devices. The README document and the information on the web site can walk you through the installation steps pretty quickly.

The technology preview provides an initial look at the features and capabilities of Intel® AMT, and is intended for testing and feedback only.

This is excellent news. I have been working on Intel AMT for a few months now, and I was not aware of http://www.openamt.org. If anyone in the community builds a great agent using this Linux ME interface, I would really like to know. Linux servers can benefit greatly from Intel AMT.

Anas,
This is awesome news. I definitely think this is a very big positive step towards seeing Intel AMT on linux.

I'm confused about the state of hardware monitoring support on recent intel boards (P/G965 + ICH8[R] chipsets).

My understanding is that the voltage and fan speed sensors are not readable thru the usual serial buses such as I2C, but that they are available thru the HECI interface instead, is that correct ????

(if it is, I think it's somewhat regrettable that intel broke lm-sensors support before AMT became widespread, but heh, I suppose seeing intel work on HECI support could be a good step towards fixing that).

Do the current AMT agents support reading these sensors or are they limited to remote power on/off, bios configuration and virtual-serial-line functionalities ???
