Wow, you guys are really persistent. :-)
Since I posted a comment in one of the previous discussions about the 915 Graphics Vista driver issue, that I was going to talk to the graphics group about the possibility of releasing an open source and/or "beta" unofficial WDDM driver, to let you at least try to get Aero Glass, Movie Maker, and DVD Maker working in Windows Vista, you've been coming here every day to see/ask if there's been any progress. So here's an update:
I haven't talked to the graphics group yet, because I'm trying to identify the right people to talk to. That's hard in such a big company (Intel has almost 100,000 employees, and I don't work directly with anyone in the Graphics group). But I'm going to find someone, eventually.
Why haven't I posted something sooner? Well, besides the fact that there wasn't any news, I was out of town last week for the MIX07 conference, and there's that whole matter of my job and having actual work to do. ;-) So I'm asking for a little patience on your part.
Also, remember that WINDOWS VISTA WORKS PERFECTLY FINE ON INTEL 915 GRAPHICS. It's just some of the advanced "eye candy" features, like Aero Glass, that don't work without a WDDM driver. To my knowledge, such a driver never existed. The fact that "it worked during the beta!" was due to the fact that Microsoft was allowing XPDM drivers to run the fancy stuff - the hard requirement for a WDDM driver wasn't put in place until later builds of Vista. There is no magical WDDM driver that Intel released during the beta, and subsequently pulled out of existence (someone would have found and hacked a version of that by now if that were the case). There is and only ever was the XPDM driver that exists today.
This isn't a ploy to make you all think that Intel "really cares" (sorry, conspiracy theorists!). I stepped in front of this bus on my own, and I intend to see it through to the end. I'm committed to maintaining transparency throughout the whole thing, too, so as soon as I know the outcome (good or bad), you will too. Stay tuned, and remember, there's NO guarantee or promise that anything will come of this! If the graphics group comes back and says they won't or can't release a WDDM driver for 915, then there's really nothing more we can do. At least we will have tried.

a mitch i agree with ya to some extent but it would be nice to experience vista with full features just to see for my self!!
This is utter pish!!!! My lappy is less than a year old too and I cannot get Aero to work due to the 915 issues (or not really issues, but lack of driver issues)!
Come on Intel...get yer finger out yer ass and give us summat we can at least BETA test and report back with perhaps?
It's the LEAST u could do......go on, I DARE YA.........!!!!!!!
Poor show intel. I am about to purchase 350 PCs and 1000 laptops. I will be ensuring they are not Intel.
goodbye my friends , i have new notebook and for one now Intel for me is enemy....good luck with driver!
Good grief, what a bunch of whiners... getting p'd off at a hw company because an OS company changed the rules... if you're gonna get pissed, don't buy Microsoft products anymore!!! There are good OS alternatives that will prolly run a LOT better than Vista anyway... and you can get the same effects!
I'm pissed off at intel. They did a major disservice to vast numbers of their loyal customers by not supporting a very, very new video chipset. I remember Ati rage pro drivers that enjoyed backward compatibility drivers from windows 95 all the way to windows xp. And now we buy notebook with i915 video in 2007 and already finds the video chipset to be out of date in the same year???
There's just no excuse for the greed and the lack of consideration from both Microsoft and Intel in this issue.
Serves them right. Microsoft has built themselves a monstrocity of an os with vista and is now seeing their core customers withholding their new IT expenditures and looking elsewhere for their OS upgrade options.
Intel..... hmm.... i'm sure their greed-oriented marketing strategy will come back to hunt them. I'm going to make sure the future notebook purchases for my office will be an amd/ati based machine!!!
Screwxx You, intel and microsft!!
Vista isn't a bad OS, Intel isn't a bad company, it was just a miscommunication. Intel wanted to get the 915 chipset out, and Microsoft wasn't yet ready to give the specs for Vista. Now don't get me wrong, I'm rather unhappy about this issue too. But I switched from XP to Vista, and upgraded my two and half year old laptop from 512MB to 2GB of ram, and Vista is running faster with the basic scheme than XP did, and Vista still looks better, I think. And the ram upgrade only cost me $50, which I don't feel is too much to complain about. The thing that surprised me the most about this is that no one has been able to figure out how to get around it. I've seen people do seemingly much crazier things which I'm sure anyone reading this has too, so it was just surprising. But I'm not one to talk, I don't have the technical skills to figure such a thing out, I was just saying it was a shock. That's all I had to say.
Vista is a bad os. If you've read the reports about the office benchmark test comparisons between xp and vista you'll know. Just google it. Vista is lagging behind xp in almost every category. Personally, i think it's wise to stick with xp. SP3 is coming out soon for xp, so that'll add to the lifespan of your xp. Vista just came out with a beta sp1, and the benchmark tests done still says it is lagging behind xp. We are talking about a whopping 50% reduction in speed or more even with vista sp1 beta.
You may not notice the slowness in vista because you haven't put the os to the test. But run a few cpu intensive programs in tantrum and see if the os still manages to keep up with xp.
i run my xp notebook with 2gb of ram too. 512mb isn't gonna cut it and besides, ram is unbelievably cheap these days.
Vista is a bad os. It's got a long way to go before the majority of the business community will consider the switch.
As for intel, huh. I'm reserving my opinions about them.
I need the driver also. I work for a major retailer and they were to purchase laptops for our managers. since I have one they asked my opinion. I told them not to waste there time. We have over 30 managers...it's alot of money. I've been watching this site for any news and still no good news. Someone from Intel needs to step up and be a man ...unless there all women over there and it explains why this crap happened
well i have been watching this website for over 3 months now and still no news (good ones) and also no one from intel has come and said anything to us for example "we will release a beta", or "we have made a WDDM driver" or even no sorry we cant do it" tehy should at least tell us something rather than not saything anything. INTEL COME ONE AND GO YOUR COSTUMERS PROUD OTHERWISE PRESSURE GOUPS ARE GOING TO BUILD UP ON YA!!!!
