There are hacks for everything, right? Well I have this brand new HP 6910p with the Intel 965 Express chipset running Vista and I could not get onto Second Life. Everytime I tried to connect, it would ask me if I wanted music and then it would crash. Well I thought, maybe my HP doesn't like music. Anyway there is another Blog that I have been following and it appeared that all of us with this chipset would be terminally barred from Second Life (it's a blog with lots of comments!)
I checked this blog last night and now it appears they know it is a problem in Open_GL and there is a setting you can add to your "settings.xml" file that seems to work (I just tried it and I'm "in World" now.) There is also a Second life Forum Thread pertaining to this fix too - click HERE to read through it.
Here is the "hack":
Find the "user_settings" folder under your Second Life folder that is under AppData or Applications Data. (It may be different whether you have XP or Vista. Also on one of my systems this file is under .../Roaming/Second Life/user_settings/ ) Note also you will have a folder with your Avatar's name. Don't change the settings.xml file in that folder - change the one in the user_settings folder.
- Find this folder on your system: \Users\myname\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.xml. You will have to manually add the command to disable Object Occlusion to this file. The lines to add are:
- <!--Enable object culling based on occlusion (coverage) by other objects-->
- <UseOcclusion value="FALSE"/>
- Save the setting.xml file and then try to connect to Second Life.
If you can't find this file, it may be hidden so go into your Folder Options and "Show hidden files."
Here are some other useful links as well: Second Life Wiki and Reducing Lag with Client Settings.

has graphics drivers for the ATI Graphics as well as the intel 965 GM graphics drivers. I'm curious, though - did your HP 6910 come with Windows XP installed or did you install it? I'm wondering if your problem has to do with XP and how it is interacting with the drivers because our HP systems all came with Vista and the Hack worked like a charm on our systems.
The hack worked fine for a while but the problem now seems to be the new "Windlight" SL client which will not allow occlusion o be set to false. It seems to simply generate a new settings.xml file and then runs as a new install.
Just got a new lap top thats using vista and I'm in love with it.....except i can't play second life!!! tried the solution above and noticed that the settings.xml is not seen anyware in the secondlife folder???? Any idea why???? I hope a solid solution for this will be released....... : - (
Did you look in the "roaming" folder under AppData? (or Applications Data?) I would send your question to the SL support site. You could do a search for that file and see if it's out there at all. Also, what version of SL are you trying to run? AND make sure you have gone out to your OEM's website to make sure you have the most recent graphics driver installed on your system.
Updated the graphics card, can't find any folder named "roaming" and can't find the settings.xml file.......I'll try sl support, but i believe they could careless about unsupported users......
What would you like for christmas????....haha j/k, its Working now!!!!!! :- 0 I couldn't find the file because the folder was hidden. Thank You!!!!! You answered my holiday prayer!!!!!! Happy Holidays!!!!!
The folder was hidden? Wow. I wonder why.... Hmmm. I guess that is why the first thing I do on a computer is check the box that says SHOW HIDDEN FILES!!!! heheheh I'm glad you got it working!
I just got a Sony Vaio cr220e laptop w/ intel x3100 graphics card and cannot run sl; I cannot tell you how ignorant I am of most all things invloving the computer and am afraid to screw it up. do you suppose this fix would work w/my computer or I shouldn't try it? thanks
finally i get to try out second life on vista! i've been waiting months for this hack! thanks =)
Gael --- Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I'm in-world.
