Mobile Developer Community Update - New Section of Energy Efficient Software

In Nov 07, we launched a new section of "energy efficient software", which aggregates the tech articles, tools and resources for learning how to create application to be power aware and efficient.

In order to make the means of our developer community clear to the targeted audiences, we started the user survey to vote the appropriate name for this community, received some feedback, mobile seems still popular selection by the audiences.

"Energy Efficient Software" Section:

With re-organizing and aggregating the aritcles, tools and resources, the section covers key vectors of "power-efficient application", including power basics, devices power consumption(Processor, disk I/O, networking, graphics), vertical apps(Gaming, etc.), developing power-aware & tools/codes. Please learn here and start to create your power aware or energy efficient apps.

Application Energy Toolkit has been released to help create and evaluate applications for power awareness on notebook. It includes a power status simulator, an application energy graphing tool and an application energy command line tool.

Bob Steigerwald and Taylor Kidd gave the tech talk of "Introduction to energy-efficient software" on 2nd life, which introducing key characteristics of software applications that make them "energy-efficient" and examines techniques for developing for performance, energy-minded disk I/O, and power-aware behavior. Mobile Platform SDK 1.2:

Two articles have been updated.

• Prioritize and Estimate Bandwidth using Intel® Mobile Platform SDK: This article shows how to provide applications with the ability to adapt to various network conditions. Use the Intel® Mobile Platform SDK to estimate and prioritize available bandwidth to your Windows* applications. Code samples included.
• Accessing System Power Information using the Intel Mobile Platform SDK: The Intel MPSDK provides functionality to monitor and track changes in the power status of a system, without the need for the application to constantly poll for the data. Software developers can learn how to obtain information pertaining to the system’s power status from this article.

New release of Mobile Platform SDK 1.2 for Linux OS will be live on the project site in Q1, 2008, most features that are in current release for Windows OS will be included in Linux version. We also want to learn what do developer think of features of Mobile Platform SDK, simple poll survey done on the project site, and can view the latest result here. Will you agree with the result? There is a new Blog post about a new mobile context aware application - MarcoPolo - super context awareness for your mobile computer by Jon Mountjoy, which implement many features that Mobile Platform can help you to create on Windows OS.

New Application & Usage for UMPCs & MIDs:

Some new applications have been created by ISVs in Asia, which bring the interesting usages to UMPC users.

• UMPC Demo: Interactive TV. It shows how a UMPC user watches TV channels through the broadcasting network and accesses Internet to get relative information about TV programs via WiFi. These new converged devices bring the capabilities that allow software developers to create more attractive usages for the users on the Go.
• UMPC Demo: Self-Organizing Network. It shows an application of Self Organizing Network that makes an easier connection between UMPC and MID devices, the application's name is SONBuddy developed by GreenPacket. SONBuddy can form a spontaneous SON Network among multiple UMPC & MID devices over WiFi without any Access Point, and users can communicate and share the information on the SON network, eg. IM chat, VoIP call, screen sharing and network game.
• UMPC Demo: Intelligent Navigation System. This is an integrated service system based on UMPC/MID platform, people can put it in the vehicle or carry it on the go. With integrated GPS, users can identify their location, navigate and find any route on the e-map, view real-time traffic information to avoid the jam, access the weather, flight information, search the "Yellow Book", and find the nearby restaurants and retailers who offer good sales. It brings all Mobile Internet Service to your portable device.

Blog Post about "Mobile TV". Jonas Kollberg published two blog posts about situation and news about Mobile DTV market in Europe. Slow progress in broadcast Mobile TV and DVB-H EU standard. Do think TV on Mobile will be new "killer app" on notebook and phone?
