Finally some good product teasing videos out of the IDF in China! It's not as good as getting product in my own hands to play with, but it's a start. This is the Lenovo Ideapad, and it sure looks pretty. Grabbed this from our mobility blog.
Dadi Perlmutter, the VP of our Mobility Group, thinks that these devices will allow there to be only one Internet rather than having separate one for mobile devices. So MIDs will be like Connor MacLeod, and mobile internet sites are like the Kurgan, and... well, maybe obscure movie analogies won't work here. Chippy at UMPC Portal gives a more practical reason why this is going to happen in the near future - because the screens just are not big and detailed enough.
Honestly, I rather agree with him. There are some big UI challenges on these tiny screens, just for building normal applications. Throw in the headache of navigating the eye-bending madness that exists in places like MySpace and you've got a real challenge on your hands.
I do think we'll get there eventually. The iPhone has made a great start with their browsing development and although it doesn't always seem this way, Apple isn't the only clever company on the block. Will the Single Internet happen in this first generation of MIDs? Maybe not. It may take a lot more UI evolution, and another generation of hardware, but we're headed in the right direction. If it takes longer than Dadi predicts, well, so be it. Part of his job is to make wacky claims like this so that the rest of us have a high bar to shoot for. Keeps things interesting.
