Once in a while the Internet yields software that demonstrates the true potential of the interconnected world within which we live, work, and play. Microsoft Research recently released the World Wide Telescope which has the potential to enable "citizen scientists to participate in research" according to Doug Roberts, director of the Adler Space Visualization Laboratory.

With the World Wide Telescope you will have access to an observatory on your desktop, allowing you to explore distant star systems or simply gaze in wonder at our neighboring planets. I only wish I had an appropriate telescope at home because you can also use the software to explore the night sky in your own back yard with your own telescope.
Go ahead, download, and then explore!!!

| Given that my father in law works for Apple, I better be careful what I say here, not to mention Apple is a great partner for our processor and graphics chipsets. All that aside though, even though I began my development career using C++ on UNIX platforms, I haven't found a more developer friendly environment than that provided by our friends in Redmond. Visual Studio 2008 rocks and I can't see myself going back to slow Java based development environments on UNIX, even if it has a friendly Apple Mac shell. |
