There's a nice post about PowerTOP for Solaris by Brian Leonard, describing in a very user friendly way what all of the displays mean. I loved it - really shows the power of the app, and the various cool things it shows you on your OpenSolaris system.
The only thing missing from the post is how PowerTOP helps the developer identify when their own code is causing power to be wasted. But I suppose since the post is targeted towards regular users rather than developers, it's an understandable omission.
It's true that PowerTOP is great for Mobility platforms (laptops etc), since battery life is most affected by power utilization. The newest version, PowerTOP v1.1, also works correctly in an xVM Guest OS.
This post is on The Observatory which is a really good blog to pick up tips and tricks for using OpenSolaris. I have found several useful features there, and have been saving them away on Del.icio.us.
