Questing for Atom developers at IDF

By Jeff Moriarty (Intel) (33 posts) on August 14, 2008 at 12:52 pm

All next week I'm going to be prowling around the Intel Developer's Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, looking for all things Atom, MID, and Moblin related.  I've been the Community Manager at Intel for the Atom Software Developer Community for a few months now, but I'm still learning what all the pieces and parts mean and how they connect together.  I'm not alone in this judging by all the comments I get from other bloggers, enthusiasts, and developers.  Some people, like Jenn Lee at Pocketables, have taken it upon themselves to try and answer questions like how to explain the Atom product line.

So I'm rolling up my sleeves and hitting IDF as someone genuinely trying to sort all this stuff out for myself.  I'll be blogging from my shiny new Asus Eee 901 PC (Atom!), and should have a few Atom based MIDs in my hot little hands during some of the show to play with and show off.  My goal is to do 100% of my event work from my Atom toys.  What works?  What doesn't?  Are there form factor issues?  Battery problems?  What apps would make things better?  How does the Eee Linux OS hold up?

I'll be connecting with Steve Paine from umpcportal.com quite a bit, and hopefully some of the other bloggers and developers at the event.  You can follow me on Twitter at MoriartyIDF, and send me a note if you want to connect to talk or ask any questions about all things related to Intel, MID, Atom, and all such things.   I'm also hoping to get some time set up to meet over coffee or lunch with anyone who wants to check out the MIDs.  So watch this space or Twitter for more info.

Is there anything you really want to know about Atom, MIDs, Moblin, or Netbooks as we head into IDF?  Anything you want me to post information about?  Leave a comment in the blogs and I will do my best to run it down!

Hi Jeff,

I'll not be able to visit the IDF but am looking forward to hear more about the MID's.
More precisely, I'd like to know more about the MID's with an HSUPA device from the company OPTION.
Are these devices presented at IDF and is it worth waiting for these in order to have full mobility experience?
I'm very satisfied about my expresscard from OPTION and am looking forward to buy an MID with HSUPA connection.

Best regards

@Bart - I don't know the answer, but I will do my best to find out. I know there will be a lot of MIDs demo'd there.

We are testing Atom system extensively. Intel's combination of G945 (20w) and Atom (4w) makes Atom desktop board a crap. It removed the advantages of Atom. I am wondering why Intel did not use netbook G945 (8w?) chipset. We can offer $10 bucks more for the chipset with passive cooling.

Hi Jeff,

Thank's for keeping us updated because the amount of information regarding MID's was quite extensive last weeks, but choosing the correct or most appropriate one will not be easy, I think. Thank's for the information.

Will the Mobile Internet Devices have voice recognition features? If yes, will those features be exhibited at the upcoming IDF show or in the future?

Hi Jeff,
Personally I am still trying to hunt down a device that is based on a 64-bit capable ATOM processor. I think this means that it has to be an ATOM N230 (single core) or N330 (dual core, but maybe not yet available?)
The form factor is less important.
Any hints are welcome!

Hello Jeff,

First 3G MID Device is out. It's an MID from Compal with the GTM501 module from Option.
Will be presented at the IDF.
If you might see, give us some feedback.
