Atom @ IDF - Lots of cool devices, still working on answers

By Jeff Moriarty (Intel) (33 posts) on August 19, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Really enjoying IDF so far, and learing quite a bit. Had a few meet ups this morning with people who wanted to learn more about MIDs, including a visit to Wired Magazine. Of course, I'm learning as much from all the talks as everyone else so my brain is filling up quickly. One of the things that makes this space so exciting is how dynamic it is. Nobody really has all the answers.

Been spending a lot of time today with Steve Paine from UMPCPortal.com, who made it over to cover IDF courtesy of his loyal users. I'm learning a lot from him on which devices he finds the most compelling and why, and how the MID, UMPC, and Netbook marketspace is shaping up. He has a gallery of MIDs from IDF on his site, and a snapshot of the "release list" on display.  Soon we should have a video of some of the devices close up.

I'm working on some of the questions asked in the earlier post about MIDs, and hope to work on them when I get down to the vendor showcase (which hasn't opened yet). I'm still open to more questions if you have them, or if you're at IDF and would like to say Hello.

Later today we are planning on shooting some more video, including a sit down and discussing the real basic question in the MID space - why would anyone want to use one of these devices when things like the iPhone are already available? It's a million... make that billion... dollar question!

To discuss your last question about who would want a MID when iPhone's are here...

I support the Intel team that designs the MID/Atom product and everytime I tell friends, family and contacts about what we're doing, they all say "Cool!"

Sometimes people just want stuff becuase it's cool, fills a gap that isn't being solved well by another product and is just plain fun to whip out and show others! :-)
I think there are countless other prodcuts that have made $$ with that premise. Anyone remember the Pet Rock...?

Very excited. I heard OQO did a technology demo of their model 02 with Atom. I can't wait to see what they come out with, though I am hearing through my contacts that it will not be until sometime in Q2 next year.

I hope to learn more about the OQO today, and sit down and really discuss what makes these devices click for people.

@Celeste - I'd love to get your input when we get the iPhone/coolness/form factor discussion online later today.

So Jeff is the One Voice Mobile Voice for MID being demoed on a Samsung unit? How did it go? I use their products at home and really enjoy the ease of use. Its faster than anything else I have ever used for command and control and am anxious to hear how well it works in the Moblin environement. Thanks for helping!

@Bob - I wasn't able to connect with ONE VOICE, but another Intel blogger, Keisha, sat down with them and posted a video about what they are doing: http://blogs.intel.com/idf/2008/08/mid.php

@Bart - I belive the devices made by Compal you will eventually see from OEMs like BenQ. From what I understand they should all support Option cards for 3G.
