I'm attending the Intel Developer Forum this week in San Francisco this week. I'll try to note comments on some of the talks I attend.
Craig Barrett's keynote wasn't so much about cool product eye candy, but it was about some of the key places he sees technology being used.
- Education: Johnny Chung Lee showed how to create an electronic whiteboard using a blank wall, a projector, a Wii remote and a custom “marker” with a battery etc and free software. A $50 electronic whiteboard! www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
- Economic development: Kiva.org hooks up lenders to microfinance borrowers in the developing two-thirds world. It takes technology to hook up the microfinance borrowers and lenders.
- Health care: carrying a card in Columbia allows you to get your health info transmitted using a cell phone camera. Then a video call to India where HMRI is delivering medicine and advice to rural villages
Some other observations.
A real 21st-century style keynote. Slides don’t have any text, but is all icons and images.
The IMAG shots of Craig were set to position him in front of one of the screens which show an image appropriate to his point. The result? It made it look like Craig was in a classroom, hospital, grassy field, etc. Cool, and no special technology like blue screen was required.
Craig did have a few criticisms of the US policy on teaching math and science and lack of investment in education. All good comments I thought.
