Intel recently announced its Intel® Remote Wake Technology, highlighting the first software and services companies that are along for the ride (Cyberlink, JAJAH, Orb and Pando). At first glance it may not appear to be that big of a deal, but take the time to take a deeper look. This is pretty cool stuff! I don’t know about you, but I certainly use my PC at home as the central storage point for my music, pictures, videos etc. And when I recently went on vacation for a couple of weeks, you can bet that I completely powered down my PC before I left – leaving all of my files stranded on my powerless hard-drive. And of course, when my mother wanted to see pictures of the grandkids, I was limited to what I had stored on the Blackberry and what was posted/hosted online, which was next to nothing. It would have been awesome if I could have woken up my PC remotely, gained access to all my pictures, shared them with my mother (hoping to return to “favorite son” status) and then put my PC back to sleep. Instead I had to make a promise to send her some pics when I got back home – which I still haven’t done. Sorry Mom.
This is just one simple scenario of how IRWT can be used in the digital home. There are many more creative and exciting things that can be done now that we can access a sleeping PC. Take a look at what our first four partners are doing with the technology and see if it gets your creative juices flowing. We’re always looking for the next great use case. If you think you’ve got it and you want to start developing for IRWT, post on the blog and we’ll see if we can help you get started.
