You are most likely running into an issue where the driver pre-dates the Windows 7 beta and the installer is checking the major and minor version numbers of the OS. If it detects anything higher than 6.0.xxxx then it will refuse to install. Personally I have the same problem with a SoundBlaster card although audio on my Intel 975XBX2 motherboard is detected by the OS.
Hopefully soon hardware vendors will begin uploading preview Windows 7 drivers that you can download, at least that is what happened during the Windows Vista beta.
The 915 chipset driver which Windows update is giving me, and which works reasonably well with reduced-acceleration WMP playback, is version 6.14.10.4764. This is also the latest one I found on the web. Anybody else find a more recent one?
Doug, can you confirm whether or not Intel will fix the issues with the Intel i915 graphics cards? I mean, the freezing with DirectX related software sucks. Even Windows Live Messenger 9 causes a hard crash on my laptop. If Intel is going to release a fix, can you find out the date the drivers "might" be released? Oh, and the Intel drivers provided with Windows Update is older than the XP drivers. XP drivers installed and work just fine on Windows 7, by the way. I just had to run the installer in compatibility mode to overcome the "OS not supported" error. Anyhow.. much appreciated if you can answer :).
I Installed Windows7 beta on a Dell D400 Latitude laptop. Everything works great but the video. The laptop has the Intel Extream 852MG/855MG graphics chipset. Has anyone gotten any driver to work? 640 X 480 16bit color is the best i can get.
Doug, I have seen your replies, and am extremely grateful at the effort you are putting in
I'm about to try installing Windows 7 on a Japanese-model Sony Vaio UX50 which says it has a 945GM chipset. I'm interested to see what happens, will post back after I've installed.
However, earlier this week I installed Windows 7 on a Panasonic Let's Note CF-R3, which has an 852/855 chipset. I had been using this quite successfully as a netbook with Ubuntu 8.04, and decided to try Windows 7, as it had impressed me on some other machines. Windows 7 installed flawlessly, and almost every device on my Panasonic worked after running Windows Update - except for the 855 chipset. I am stuck with the standard VGA driver. I can get my full 1024x768 resolution, and my screen image is great. I didn't try much in the way of video playback - just youtube, which worked fine.
However, the main issue is - and for a laptop this is a DOOZY - with the standard VGA driver, I CANNOT sleep or hibernate. Makes my tiny little laptop pretty useless as a tiny little laptop. Go-anywhere machine which cannot really go anywhere because I can't sleep it.
I tried a variety of workarounds to get the XP drivers for this chipset to install - with no luck. It either just reverted to the Standard VGA driver after a reboot, or else BSOD.
I understand that Windows 7 is still a beta, so I can understand that Intel may not have drivers ready yet. However, that old 852/855 chipset is in THOUSANDS if not MILLIONS of laptops sold over the past several years. I would hope that Intel will produce drivers - in fact it will be inexcusable if they do not, given the staggering number of these machines which must be out there.
As another poster pointed out, the saddest thing is that Windows 7 FINALLY is an OS which runs SPECTACULARLY on these older machines, and limited-spec machines like netbooks.
Let me be clear, I am NOT expecting Aero and fancy stuff on such old hardware - but at the VERY LEAST it must be able to support all that the hardware is capable of - that means the full screen resolution, basic video playback - and FULL POWER MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS!!
I really hope Intel will produce at least basic drivers for these older chipsets. The whole laptop market was pretty-much under Intels control for the last few years. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but in my view it is Intel's responsibility not to leave all these thousands and millions of owners out in the cold.
Hi! I was just wondering if anybody has some information concerning vertex/shader-support on the latest Intel-drivers for x3100 on Win 7 ?
Most of the games and some applications give the answer that I need a gfx with vertex shader-support. x3100 already has this support but apperently the drivers for Win 7 doesn´t have this?
Good news for my DG45FC problem.
The res timings issue has been resolved by Intel's revised driver for G45's., its available on the Win7 Windows Update.
Thanks guys

I'm extremely disappointed.
First, with Vista, Intel dropped all mainstream notebooks with 915GM.
Now with W7 Intel dropped all mainstream netbooks with 945GM.
What's wrong with them? They want Microsoft to fail that bad? All the point of Windows 7 is WDDM1.1, without it - no better than Vista, you can't open more than dozen of windows and everything is magnitude slower.

Hey Al,
This is how I got the 852GM/855GM drivers installed on my D400:

You'll need DriverMax as well: http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/
