Windows 7 Beta - DVD Writer

By Doug Holland (Intel) (249 posts) on January 13, 2009 at 2:39 pm

I have now been using the Windows Server 2008 R2 beta and Windows 7 beta builds for some time and have found them to be incredibly stable. I am now using the Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta "Aero Enabled" Workstation as the primary OS on both my personal notebook and desktop and would do so also on my corporate notebook if our IT department allowed.

One aspect of both the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 beta builds that I really like is the ability to burn ISO images to CD or DVD without third party software. It does not appear however, that ISO images can be mounted as virtual CD or DVD drives without third party software such as Roxio Creator 2009. Microsoft used to make available a Virtual CD utility to MSDN subscribers that enabled this although a version that worked with Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 was never released.

There are many free or cheaper alternatives for mounting ISO in Windows than Roxio. Slysoft/Elby Virtual CloneDrive is one of my favorites. Give it a whirl. :)

No sooner did I say that did a new beta (version 5.4.2.1) of Virtual CloneDrive came out. Get it at Betanews. http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Virtual_CloneDrive/1224002998/1

Hi Dr. Apps

Appreciate the feedback and as an FYI to those who already have a Roxio Easy Media Creator 2009 license. It will install upon both Windows 7 beta and also Windows Server 2008 R2 beta although upon opening the application it crashes unfortunately.

Hopefully after RTM a service release will be made available, until then I'll use Windows disk manager to resize the disk and I'm downloading a copy of Vista again from MSDN to use for a media DVD I need to create.

Quick update on Roxio Easy Media Creator 2009 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Installing the SP2 update fixed the problem that prevented the application from launching and it seems to be working at the moment on Windows Server 2008 R2. I would assume it to also work on Windows 7 with the SP2 update.

I would be careful with using virtual mounters on win7 right now, they are all (virtual clone drive, daemon, etc. ) known to cause issues with shutdown.

Is it possible to dual boot both window 7 and vista. So I don't have to give up on Vista.

Hey Veritas,

Thanks for the advise there regarding existing virtual mounting utilities...

Hopefully it will soon become a standard Windows feature in both the graphical shell and also the command line.

Hey Brian,

Absolutely!!!

Install Vista first and then install Windows 7 on a second partition or second hard drive and you'll be presented with a boot menu upon restart.

You also might be interested to know you can resize your disk within the disk utilities for Windows Vista and Windows 7. This can be useful to shrink your Vista drive to enable you to create room for Windows 7.

Doug

I'm wondering though, if it becomes standard, you'll hear an uproar from people not allowed to run their games due to "Emulation software detected" routines used to protect such games (SecureRom, etc). I expect that this could be a major concern from these copy-protection companies, as it would give them even more bad press.

Hello Doug,

I installed Windows 7 on an old machine (512 RAM, 800 Mhz processor,..) just to see what happens and what a surprise.. it worked fine!
I've listened at many places that Windows 7 is faster than Vista and XP and I'm going to believe that it's true.

Cheers

Hey Javier,

Windows 7 is certainly faster than Windows XP and Windows Vista, just can't wait until I can upgrade my corporate laptop sometime in the future...

VirtualCloneDrive was not instaled well - no shell on Windows 7. I manage to mount files but big problem with unmount them as I don't have any option to do that. Only with Run /u option :(

Hey Sam,

Once Windows 7 is released VirtualCloneDrive may well have to be upgraded to support that OS.

Ideally we'll see this feature included within either a service pack to Windows 7 or Windows 8. If implemented in Windows I wonder how much money Microsoft would save internally reducing the need to burn CD's and DVD's? I'd think that would be motivation enough...

Regards,

Doug
