PowerTOP: Dave enters a video game
By David Stewart (Intel) (174 posts) on February 22, 2009 at 1:35 am
Always wanted to see Dave Stewart fragged, as in "killed in a video game" ?
Yes, I knew you did. Ah, yet another analogy goes haywire.
This is another in a series of digital shorts about work Intel is doing in OpenSolaris. (Have I really done 15 of these things). This one is about PowerTOP, and how you can use it to "green" your software applications and drivers. I also talk about our use of DTrace to collect the information. And too, the video production guys have fun with a few special effects as well. Enjoy.
(If you're wondering, the T-Shirt is from the inaugural Nomiki of the Tokyo OpenSolaris User's Group).
(As always, you will "score a hit" if you watch all the way to the end of the video).

Cool video, and great to see you in the Tokyo OpenSolaris User Group shirt! I have to wear mine more. :) By the way, you say "go to opensolaris.com" but the text overlay on the video says "http://www.opensolaris.org". |

| @Matt - thanks for the QA... :-) I noticed this as well (who could miss it?) but didn't think it was worth correcting. |

Akexander Eremin | Very cool video, and I like Intel's way with OpenSolaris. |

Nice video.. and nice effects... i didnt mean the particle strike, but you getting ready for oscars ;). Also to mention Power aware dispatcher has been promissed for ON 110.. OpenSolaris will be really cool using less watts! |

I just watched all of your videos on YouTube then found your blog. I wanted to thank you and Intel for putting together those videos. They were very informative and as someone that has liked Solaris for a long time, I'm glad that Intel is putting so much effort into it and the the open source team at Intel seems to have such genuine enthusiasm for the project. Maybe you even surpass your goal of having Xeon be the best choice if someone chooses Solaris/OpenSolaris and wind up making Solaris/OpenSolaris the best choice if someone chooses Xeon as well. |

Oh, forgot to add... Keep up the work on the laptop front too. Intel makes a lot of chips that power different components so the more device drivers you guys can get into OpenSolaris the better. Not everyone starts out with the latest and greatest hardware when they begin developing or start a new project and it's important to get Solaris working well on a laptop (hardware support and good power management). I think it's a smart move since the industry is moving towards multi core multi threaded CPUs and Solaris has already been able to run many CPUs for years and has been doing very well on the CMT chips. |
