Open Source in Data Warehousing

With the recent announcement about the Ingres VectorWise project, open source solutions for data warehousing has been getting some additional attention. Ingres VectorWise is designed to take better advantage of new processors and storage hardware to provide increased performance and scale database workloads at a reduced cost to companies. While the product hasn't been released yet, some of the initial performance tests look very promising.

According to the Ingres Press Release:

  • "Initial results show that the Ingres VectorWise project achieves more than 10x performance gains."
  • "Nearly 80 fold speed up on a query modelled after the Q1 query of TPC-H3 suite on the Intel Xeon processor."
  • Note: See the Ingres Press Release for more information and sources of this data.

Matthew Aslett from The 451 Group has been doing some heavy research into open source's role in lowering the barriers to data warehousing and is working on a report that is expected to be published in the next couple of months. His blog post provides a run-down of open source use in the data warehousing sector, but here are a couple of highlights:

  • PostgreSQL is used in solutions provided by some of the major providers, including Netezza, Greenplum, and Aster Data.
  • MySQL is being used by Infobright, Kickfire and Calpont.
  • The launch of Infobright Community Edition in 2008 was the first commercial open source company with their core warehouse software released under an open source license.

Infobright is seeing amazing performance benefits from the new Intel chips. Way to go Intel.
