The most influential and industry changing games of all time? I have seen this question come up a lot lately among people I chate with so i decided to post and ge some thoughts on it. The most influential games of all time are in my opinion Super Mario and then several titles by ID software, like Doom, Quake and even their first title Commander Keen.

Basically you have to thank Super Mario for providing the inspiration to Carmack to create a rapid side scrolling game for the PC. This of course led to Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake etc which also led to ID software and Romero licensed the engine technologies to other developers.

This of course led to several other break throughs in development in PC games (like the Unreal engine) which made so may great console games popular and possible...

My thoughts anyway, what do you think?

I think this boils down to different strokes for different folks.

For me personally.

1) Mech Warrior 2 is what got me into the Games Industry. So I'll always have a soft spot for that game. Oh FASA.. where are you? <sigh>
2) Quake 2 - This game really hooked me into playing 1st person shooters. Frankly.. I don't think I've ever played a game since that was as 'fast-paced' & actually skill oriented. Unfortunately we've seen 1st Person shooters dumbed down & slowed down so that they play on a game pad for Consoles. <meh>
3) Baldurs Gate - I loved some of the story lines in this game. Rare that I'll play through every scenario & explore every nook & cranny in a game; but in this one I did!
4) World of Warcraft - Obviously not the 1st MMORPG - but from a playability stand point this game is still going strong. I also believe WoW has proved that PC Gaming is still a very viable gaming scenario. Obviously Consoles will be strongly targetting that scenario in their next gen - but that I think will be an interesting 'fail-boat' scenario to watch. If for any reason - they won't be able to call themselves Consoles anymore & will have to own up to being proprietary PC's. I'm sure the OEMs will just love that.

Matt,
I agree with you this is really a personal choice and based on what peoples preferences are.

I really like your games that you chose and why, those are all great titles and were influencial as well for various reasons. I too look forward to seeing how the consoles look to evole and deal with targeting certain spaces where they have not been able to win over yet like the MMO space. I posted in another (let me call it out though a really basic post) post on some very high level points for the PC and gaming. However I did not get to this level and the I agree with you they are going to have make some changes to take advantage of some gemres they have not been good at yet and it will be VERY interesting when that happens.

Lets see. There's Doom, which really spawned the 3D RTS craze. (Quake, Rise of the Trial, Duke Nukem 3D, among others)
The civilization franchise is still going, and it spawned a host of games too, including Alpha Centari, Master of Magic, and a couple of others.
Master of Orion was probably the Civ of space explration games.
Kings Quest by Sierra Online launched graphical adventure games.
There's the old Gold Box D&D games which were influental PC RPGs.
Rogue also created an entire category of games.
