Interview: Li Xin, Open Source Virtualization Expert

By Dawn M. Foster (91 posts) on December 10, 2009 at 8:00 am

Li Xin currently works in Intel's Open Technology Center in PRC. He joined Intel to develop virtualization technology in 2004 and is engaging in the development of VMM based on Intel virtualization technology. He is actively involved in the open source virtualization projects, Xen and KVM.

Dawn: What do you like about working in Intel's Open Source Technology Center?

Xin: 2 things: (1) Interesting and challenging projects; (2) creative and kind talents. I love most of the projects we are working on, which force me to think deeper and from different angles, and I can always learn something new. People here are of course a key; lots of people gave me chances to gain experience and develop, not just for technical skills, but also on my career. I think I have grown a lot after joining Intel. Of course I would like to help others enjoy working and growing in Intel; I believe it’s a part of the Intel culture.

Dawn: Why are projects like Xen and KVM important to Intel?

Xin: Virtualization is no doubt a fundamental infrastructure of future computing models, and we believe virtual will be better than real. Xen and KVM provide open source virtualization solutions for the industry, and the industry can build usage models on top of those solutions with specific domain knowledge and expertise. It’s really great that we are working for not only Intel, but also the whole industry.

Dawn: What are some of the most recent enhancements that you have worked on for Xen and KVM?

Xin: Network performance and scalability. We believe virtualization can provide near native performance, and part of our job is to make that happen earlier.

Dawn: What do you do for fun when you aren't working at Intel?

Xin: I like traveling with my family.
