Accenture's Take on the Benefits of Open Source Software
By Dawn M. Foster (91 posts) on February 4, 2010 at 8:00 am
Accenture recently released a report about accelerating the benefits of open source software, and here are a few quotes that I found particularly interesting:
- An Accenture study showed that in 2008, "77 percent of high-performance IT organizations are now piloting or committing to open source, compared to just 37 percent of overall global businesses."
- "Particularly true in a slow economy, OSS helps IT organizations continue making progress while simultaneously cutting costs, avoiding some traditional procurement, license and maintenance fees while still delivering new services."
- "Thanks to the maturation of OSS, historical concerns over enterprise use have largely become non-issues."
- "To reap all of the benefits OSS has to offer and achieve high performance, however, organizations must also manage all OSS used in the enterprise. With proper planning and good governance, organizations can adopt open source software widely and realize great returns."
Most of us don't think of Accenture when we think about open source, but they are more involved than you might have realized, and it hasn't entirely gone unnoticed in the industry. In an interview with Matt Asay, Accenture said:
"Open source is growing within both Accenture and our client base. We continue to be substantial users of open source, particularly in custom Java development, and our focus is expanding beyond this space to cover the gamut of open source portals, content management, business intelligence and data management. We also continue to contribute to open-source projects where we expect the results to benefit our clients."
I'll admit to being a bit surprised that Accenture is this focused on open source, and it shows how far open source software has come in the past few years.
