Manageability Software Assessment Tool
By Andrew Schiestl (Intel) (5 posts) on May 3, 2010 at 8:39 am
There is a new set of tools available through ISPP (here: Software Assessment Tools ) for helping to evaluate various aspects of software development. For those developing software to work with Intel vPro, just recently the Manageability Software Assessment tool was made available. You will have to be signed on to ISPP to download the tool, but getting an account on ISPP is pretty painless. And as I discuss later, there's a pretty substantial possible reward for using the tool.
So I've told you that it's available, why should you use this tool? There's a video here that describes some details, I have my own list of of reasons as well.
1. It will help during development/debugging. I typically recommend using a network analyzer (such as wireshark) for debugging, but the sheer amount of data can be intimidating for people who aren't already familiar with network analyzer's. The Manageability Software Assessment tool only displays the Intel AMT commands that are being sent to the system without the other network traffic or network details confusing the issue. It's similar to the vPro packet decoder that's available on the vPro Expert Center, but with even more of a focus on ease of use. Using it is as easy as downloading the tool, running it on the same system with your software that's sending the commands to AMT, and using your software as normal.
2. It helps Intel get data on what Intel vPro is being used for, and how Intel vPro is being used. After you use the tool, you can run the analysis on whether the packets that the tool saw matched what was expected for the use cases specified (if you have an ISPP account, these use cases should be familiar, you specified them when creating your project). After running this analysis, you can submit your results to Intel through the ISPP site. If the expected packets weren't seen, but packets with Intel AMT arguments were, we're even more interested in getting your submission. Knowing how vPro is being used gives us better data to improve vPro in the future.
3. There are possibly rewards for doing so This is the part that anybody should be interested in, there are some pretty interesting possible prized for using the tool and submitting results. Some of the details are here, but to sum up the most interesting prize, if you submit results before July 16th, you have a chance to win a trip to the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
