Getting Computer Power State on iGoogle
By Ylian Saint-hilaire (Intel) (258 posts) on September 9, 2010 at 4:03 pm
In the last weeks we worked on a new feature to get power management information on iGoogle. This is all part of the peer-to-peer mesh management software we are building. For the last few months, users would install a peer-to-peer agent on their computers and start tracking their computers on meshcentral.homeip.net. We then enabled our first Twitter support, allowing computers to tweet events like power state changes.
Continuing in this line of thinking, we wanted to integrate the peer-to-peer mesh information with more web site and so, we did today with iGoogle. Users can install the mesh agent on their machines, hook the agents to an account on meshcentral. Then, you have to opt to make your mesh information public. This will give you a link your friends can use to look at your computer states. On the same page the state is displayed, there is now an iGoogle icon that allows anyone to add the power tracking gadget to their Google homepage.
The general idea is that most people will no longer need to come to MeshCentral to get overview information. The information is shared so that it's available where you would want it. In the future, I expect to add many new features to this gadget, including being able to turn computers on and off, etc. Of course, you would need the right authentication but it should make the iGoogle gadget quite powerful.
Right now, we only have a pie chat with relative time spent in all power states for all computers on a mesh. And a bar graph with a weighted power usage. Full power being worth 100 points every second, Standby worth 5 point, Sleep worth 1 points. The relative score from day to day shows an approximation of how much power the mesh computers are using.
