Management Developers Conference - Day 1
By Jeffrey Rott (Intel) (22 posts) on November 16, 2010 at 6:21 pm
The first day at the Manageability Developers Conference (www.mandevcon.com) in Santa Clara was University Day. Unlike some other conferences where University Day is a chance for college students to enter at a discounted price near the end of the conference, MDC University Day is the opening day of the conference and is all about giving attendees a head start to the rest of the conference. There were two tracks to be followed: Introductory and Advanced.
I started my day with the Introductory session and was joined by students, new hires, people in new roles and a few people making career changes. The session provided an introduction to the basic concepts of the Common Information Model (CIM) and Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) technologies. My main takeaway was that management is all about the protocols and standards. We also got a real good feel for the DMTF organization (www.dmtf.org) and their role in standards development. Speaking of the standards, to back-up Gael Hofemeier’s latestest blog, WS-MAN stole all the spotlight away from SOAP. WS-MAN is definitely the way to move forward when developing for AMT.
After feeling pretty good about myself, I ventured into the Advanced session in the afternoon. BIG MISTAKE! It felt much like my first day at Intel with acronyms flying around the room at a dizzying pace. Were these people speaking the same language as me? Well in the Advanced session they clearly were not. Jim Davis of WBEM Solutions, who just so happens to have written the forward to the book that we’re handing out, was leading a much more experienced group of participants. And just like my first day at Intel, everyone else seemed to understand what was being said except for me. After dodging a few questions and avoiding eye contact with Jim at all cost, I found a polite way to exit with my tail between my legs and made my way back to the Introductory session. Thank goodness I have fantastic engineers to support me and the community.
If you’re involved at all with management standards, University Day is something to put on your To-Do list.
