Intel® OpenCL SDK – Alpha update now available

By Arnon Peleg (Intel) (5 posts) on February 10, 2011 at 6:52 am

Intel continues to demonstrate its commitment to parallel computing tools and standards support with the recent announcement of an update to the Intel® OpenCL SDK alpha version on WhatIf.intel.com.
This update release brings full coverage of the OpenCL™ 1.1 standard to the Intel® Core™ processors, and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Currently, Microsoft* Windows* 7 and Windows Vista* operating systems are supported.

On the web site WhatIf.intel.com, Intel provides Alpha software free of charge, but without any warranty that it works as expected or will be supported as is in the future. Nevertheless, this release gives you the opportunity to experiment with OpenCL* capabilities on Intel CPUs long before they become available as a commercial product on Intel platforms.

OpenCL* is an emerging standard from the Khronos Group industry consortium. As a Khronos founder and promoter, Intel has made significant contributions to OpenCL* feature set and continue to be part of the Khronos OpenCL* Working Group. Intel is a strong supporter of open industry standards that create developer choice and foster innovation. The Intel® OpenCL SDK is an addition to Intel’s proven, innovative parallel programming tools available to developers.

Lots of great feedback has helped us to shape this update release. And here's just a sample of what's new:

  • 64 bit support
  • Full coverage of the OpenCL* 1.1 standard on the CPU (check Intel® OpenCL SDK website for conformance status)
  • Preview Feature: Support for printf() in OpenCL* C kernels (cl_intel_printf)
  • Intel OpenCL Offline compiler bug fixes and improvements

Intel® OpenCL SDK is based on a published Khronos Specification, and is expected to pass the Khronos Conformance Testing Process. Current conformance status can be found at www.khronos.org/conformance.

An OpenCL SDK for Ubuntu or Linux would be great! Please support the CL_KHR_ICD model so it can co-exist with GPU and other OpenCL drivers.

Would really like to see a version of Intel OpenCL SDK running on the Haiku OS. it is a highly multi-threaded hybrid microkernel architecture, POSIX compliant.
