Doug Binks (Intel)

I’m a Senior Application Engineer at Intel, working in the Visual Computing Software Enabling team with game developers to assist their development on Intel architectures. Prior to joining Intel in 2008 I worked in the games industry in roles ranging from graphics programmer to head of studio. Despite an early interest in games development I careered sideways into a doctorate in Physics, and undertook two postdoctoral posts as an academic researcher in experimental nonlinear pattern formation, specializing in fluid mechanics before getting back into creating games.

We've updated the Dynamic Resolution Rendering sample with an optimisation to the temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) upscale pass and added a few new features for improved qualitative comparisons focused on TAA. You can find the updated sample here. The changes, listed below, are detailed in this pdf. Added optimization for temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) when using motion [...]

The Dynamic Resolution Rendering sample, first shown at the Games Developers Conference 2011 in San Francisco, has now gone live in time for games developers attending my Develop UK 2011 talk to check it out. This sample demonstrates a technique for balancing rendering quality and performance through altering the resolution at runtime. Download the sample [...]

I'll be giving a talk at GDC 2011 in San Francisco about a technique I've been working on called Dynamic Resolution Rendering. The concept of dynamic resolution rendering, like a good game, is simple to grasp but with hidden complexity needed for true mastery. At its most basic, the scene is rendered via a dynamically [...]

Distributing Shadow Map Calculations

By Doug Binks (Intel) (8 posts) on January 4, 2011 at 10:33 am

Before joining Intel, one of the re-occurring issues with balancing performance and quality in games was how to handle the shadows for slow changing or stationary lights such as the Sun. For example a recent game I worked on used a combination of cascaded shadow maps along with a low resolution shadow map covering the [...]

Detecting the install path for Microsoft Visual Studio from C++

During a recent project I needed to find out the install location of the Microsoft Visual Studio version a user has, in order to be able to run compiles from the command line, and run Vcvars32.bat to set up the required environment variables. Though there's enough information on the web do figure out how to [...]
