The apps on the "AppUp" Beta store! Here are my favorites - what are yours?

Back in September 2009 Paul Otellini announced the launch of the Intel Atom Developer program. Many folks in the group where I work (Including me) have been involved with this project for the past few months and are really excited about the possibilities that this program offers. Well today Paul was again on stage @ the Consumer Electronics Show with another exciting announcement - This time users in the US and Canada will be able to download the client and download and purchase applications from the AppUpCenter.

One of the things that has surprised me is how enthusiastic the ISV's have been at the chance to participate in this program. I have talked with quite a few who are very impressed with the Atom based netbooks and who have made small adjustments to their apps to make them more netbook friends (online offline mode, supporting netbook screen resolutions etc.)

I have had a chance to use the client in anticipation of the event and I want to share with you some of the exciting applications that are available on the store:

Here are a few of my favorites:

Boxee:
Boxee is a social media center. with boxee you can play videos, music and pictures from your PC or from the Internet. you can also share with your friends what albums you're listening to, what movies and TV shows you're watching, send recommendations and more.

I use Boxee at home with my Mac Mini hooked to my HDTV (and on my netbook) - This is useful in playing music, watching comedy central as well as other content in french that (news etc.)

iEat for Life: Diabetes
I don't have Diabetes (yet) but about 6 months ago my doctor told me I needed to lose 10 pounds and cut down on my refined sugar intake since my blood sugar level was a bit high and since Diabetes has afflicted others in my family. Thanks to exercise and watching the diet a bit more I did lose about 20 pounds and my risk factors such as blood sugar levels did come down - but this is the first application that I have seen where my diet can be optimized in order to reduce the chances of coming down with Diabetes. This app is very visual and simple to use to the point where I will actually use it.

iEat for Life: Diabetes walks you through the grocery store, department by department, with a helpful shopping list of foods that can help you manage diabetes or lower your risk of developing it.

Wikihow survival kit -
This has been useful to me when I was not able to be online since I can save articles for future review. I downloaded and saved a few articles on my driving trip last week from Nevada through Utah to Oregon. Some of the articles I like are "How to eat like a bodybuilder" and "How to think like a genius" - Now I just need to apply this knowledge!

So tell me about the Applications you like on the Appup store? What apps are your favorites? Which apps would you like to see in the store?

See you soon! A bientot - Russ Beutler

Top 10 Videos on ISN produced in June: Deadlocks, waits, Blips, Betty and a WIN A PRIZE with the mystery photo….

I am new to the blogsphere here at Intel …there are so many fun and interesting things going on at the Intel Software Network….For the past few months I have been editing an internal communication that highlights some of the top 10 blogs, articles and Take Five videos on the website. I would like to start blogging about some of these.

Today I am going to talk about the top 10 videos by number of views that were published in the month of June:

Starting off at #10: I remember in graduate school learning about bottlenecks in a production cycle. If I recall right the factory workers named these bottlenecks “Herbie” – In this video the narrator talks about a new tool that shows the CPU utilization by core in order to best optimize my parallel programming performance.

#9: The Matrix or Intel? Some of my work colleagues have apparently got caught in the Matrix here at Intel – I haven’t seen any adapter outlets in their necks but I have noticed that some of us are quite tired – maybe it is the 104 degree weather here in Oregon. (A couple weeks ago)

#8: Parallel Studio Overview: It looks like from the opening graphs in this video that by 2010 almost all CPU shipping will be Multicore processors. I did see an ad for a laptop with a single core CPU in it while reading this Sunday’s newspaper but that was a really glaring exception.

#7: ISN TV! Every Tuesday our office is turned into a production studio for the Intel Software Network TV – Intel’s interactive TV channel on the web.

At #6 Wreaking Havok: Check out the Havok destruction and cloth demo from the Game Developer Conference. There are actually 10,000 pieces that make up this bridge…. When the bombs on bridge go off these 10,000 pieces break up into about 2,500 pieces and the train on the bridge falls to the floor using Havok physics and gravitational constants.

They are also simulating 16 high independent high-resolution dresses including over 7,000 triangles (clothes moving in reaction to dancing models) in real-time on a Corei7 processor.

#5: Betty this is your lucky day! Where else have you seen an Intel video with a laugh track? “Have you struggled with scaling? Have you been a victim of data races and contention? And what about those pesky for loops?? – Starring: Paul Steinberg as Betty and Dr. Clay Breshears as Himself.”

#4: Steve is a recovering animator – see what he is no up with the new LevelUp 2009 contest. For the first time, this year’s contestants will be judged by a panel consisting of pioneering game developers who helped shape the industry (including Sid Meier, Will Wright and Rick Raymo), plus a team of experts from Intel.

#3: Moblin is Intel’s Open Source Operation System for net books. I don’t yet have a net book but after lugging around a 7 pound laptop these last 9 years I wouldn’t mind lightening my load. I have friends that only take their net book with them when they go on vacation – that way they have their digital content with them without the temptation of checking their work email.

#2: Ok can anyone tell me what a “Dead Lock” is? Actually I looked it up on www.wikipedia.com it states: A deadlock is a situation wherein two or more competing actions are waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does. It is often seen in a paradox like "the chicken or the egg". I really like the example of the illogical statute passed by the the Kansas Legislature “When two trains approach each other at a crossing, both shall come to a full stop and neither shall start up again until the other has gone.

For #1 - Intel's GPA Suite - I learned that an ERG is any piece of GPU work – Draw call, clear, Blip or anything else….

So what are your favorite videos? What kind of video content would you like to see in the future on ISN? Please do tell!

I have a potentially valuable prize to give away here – I will mail this to the winner.

Take a look at this picture and tell me in the Comments section below the following:

1.	Who are these people?
2.	Where are they (Place, City, Country)
3.	What event is this photo concerning?

I will give the answer to this in the next blog post….

Cheers - Russ
