The Impact of SSDs on SW Development

Dear Readers,

How many of you are aware of what solid state drives bring to SW development?

Whereas we've developed some pretty good case studies on what SSDs do for game development I'd like to find some additional developers to work with.

Here aretwo examples of case studies done with Game Developers. What types of SW developers, and who, should I be reaching out to for additional testing with Intel Solid-State drives?

Ubisoft: Streamlining Software Development

a)Examines an interactive entertainment company that boosts workstation performance with Intel Solid-State Drives.

Digital Extremes: Delivering Extreme Entertainment with Intel Solid-State Drives

a)Intel Solid-State Drives help Digital Extremes increase the efficiency of game development and maximize innovation.

I look forward to your feedback!

Thx

Kevin

I'm looking forward to have larger SSD because now a days I can't use SSD as a main disk because it's too small.

Thanks.

I utilize a SSD in my home machine (120GB OCZ Vertex II), work machine, server, and wife's laptop. Size is no issue as I run a second hard drive with 1TB plus and just put the OS and games that are most demanding on the SSD. The performance boost for the machine has actually shifted my interest in gaming software design. I used to design based on ease of accessibility. With 2 to three minutes to boot and with a busier schedule I tended to gravitate towards Xbox 360 and Wii as the games seemed more accessible. Since I've upgraded to SSD's I've noticed a boot time of 30 seconds and because of this I am up and testing faster on my computer now. Not only that but in game rendering on my ssd has made load screens a thing of the past. Skyrim for example loads in 3 to 4 seconds on my ssd where as on my 360 it takes 30 to 40 seconds. When testing in a specific area the fast travel guarantees a certain amount of time lost just waiting on the next load screen. I find that I play more games because of the SSD and because of this my design has shifted back to the PC as opposed to for thing like the kinect or wii motes like I was doing before.

We started to work with SSD computers this year. At this moment we already have impressive performances, comparing to other equipments. We are working in an article and we will share with you as soon as possible! All the best!
