Detecting the install path for Microsoft Visual Studio from C++
During a recent project I needed to find out the install location of the Microsoft Visual Studio version a user has, in order to be able to run compiles from the command line, and run Vcvars32.bat to set up the required environment variables. Though there's enough information on the web do figure out how to do this, no one article had the complete solution so I thought I'd post mine here.
Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora. OS choices based on function and data types.
For the last couple of years I have been using Windows and Ubuntu as development systems for Atom work. More recently I’ve also enjoyed using Fedora. Over time I’ve realized that all three of these operating systems are very capable and that the primary reason I have a Windows system is due to the functionality of specific programs along with the proprietary data I have that is stored in certain files. If it weren’t for these very specific programs and needs, I could freely move between any of these OS’s now since they are all very capable systems.

I thought that I would post this since one of my co-workers at Cadence will be gave a webinar on his experience parallelizing an existing application. The application and algorithms involved are really complex. It was especially interesting because it involves legacy code and also the development environment was Windows unlike many EDA applications which run on Linux/Unix. I really recommending watching.

A Merlot, a Malbec and a Moblin
Last week, a few of us were talking about future Moblin OS releases, and we were just having fun and starting talking about our wish list for code name "themes". You know, this is when a series of products are given code names before their real names go on, and the code names follow a certain pattern.
For example, releases of Microsoft Windows used to be named for cities in the US (Memphis, Chicago) and then switched to ski areas (Whistler, Longhorn, Blackcomb).

Этот пост должен был появиться довольно давно, но я откладывал и откладывал - думал, а вдруг что-то изменится? Вдруг напишу, а потом ка-ак переползу на Mac OS окончательно. Но нет. Вот уж сколько времени прошло, а отвращение к Windows так и не поселилось в моем сознании. Наоборот, работу в среде Mac OS я воспринимаю, как довольно тяжелую работу. Вроде уже привык, вроде софтом оброс, но, увы, в Windows, которых принято считать недружелюбными, я чувствую себя гораздо комфортнее. Наверное, сказывается тяжелое провинциальное детство на исходе социализма.
