The Inner Game of Concurrency Programming: Optimizing for Intel's Dual Cores

by Alexandra Weber Morales

Abstract

While much has been written about the whys, hows, and whether-or-not-to's of threading, there's been little focus on the most productive way to pound a paradigm shift like this one into place. Here's a peek into the Zen of threading for game developers.

  • An Overview of How to Accurately Model Procedurally Spreading Fire

The Smoke demo, which highlights the scalability of a multi-threaded game engine architecture, includes a novel approach for creating procedural fire. In this article we describe the mechanism used to create realistic fire and an additional water effect.

  • Musings on the Digital Revolution and Bill Kovacs

I would like to take my hat off to a departed friend, Bill Kovacs on this 4th anniversary of his passing. He was one of the first to have the idea to take the same computer graphics tools being used in films, and commercials and make the first off the shelf animation software that could be available to everyone. That was back in 1984 when Bill Kovacs, Larry Barels and Mark Sylvester took the risk to open up the company, Wavefront Technologies. In 1995 Silicon Graphics bought and merged Wavefront with a competing company Alias Research forming AliasWavefront.
