How can I get Intel® DCM for evaluation?

If you want to try Intel® DCM features and values, please send mail to dcm.sales@intel.com to ask for download the trial version

Which operating systems does Intel® DCM support?

Currently, Intel® DCM version 2.1 officially supported operating system includes:
Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 and x64 edition
Windows server 2008 x86 and x64 edition
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) Server x86 and x64 Edition
Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES 10) x86 and x64 Edition

I installed 2 DCM versions in a cluster environment where all files and folders are shared with NFS system, but I cannot open the reference UI.

We do not recommend installing 2 DCM packages in a cluster environment, especially in the environment where the home folder is NFS shared by all managed servers. If you want to install DCM in such environment, please ensure the home directory is not shared.

During Intel® DCM installation, I enabled TLS settings, and after installation, I cannot open the reference UI, what is the reason?

To enable TLS settings, please make sure you have set the correct TLS configuration, and saved the configuration using the right format as TLS requested. Then, you need to open the reference UI with the URL: https://localhost:8643/DataCenterManager, where D, C and M are capitalized

I have installed Intel® DCM package successfully in Linux operating system, but when I try to open the Intel® DCM reference UI locally with the URL: http://localhost:8688/DataCenterManager, it always fails.

For this issue, please make sure the following steps are configured as follows:
  • The firewall has been turned off, or Intel® DCM has been added into firewall permission list
  • The SELinux has been disabled, or Intel® DCM has been added into SELinux permission list
  • There is no proxy configuration in Firefox browser
  • The computer name has been bundled with localhost in hosts config file
  • The flash player plug-in has been installed successfully
  • If the computer name is localhost, please make sure there is no other computer in the network named as the same name: localhost

Q: When I install Intel® DCM on operating system Cent 5.5 x64 Edition, during installation, there is an error reported: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. And the installation failed.

Officially Intel® DCM does not support installation on this operating system. As to the issue itself, the reason for this is that Cent operating system has no lib file: libxml2.so.2, which is one of Intel® DCM dependencies, we suggest installing this file first, then install Intel® DCM

I have installed Intel® DCM package successfully in Windows operating system, but when I try to open the Intel® DCM reference UI locally with the URL: http://localhost:8688/DataCenterManager, it always fails.

For this case, please make sure the following steps are configured as follows:
The firewall has been turned off, or Intel® DCM has been added into firewall permission list
The flash player has been installed successfully

How to open Intel® DCM reference UI remotely?

Be default, Intel® DCM uses computer name to make the identification in network, so if there is no DNS in network, to open Intel® DCM reference UI remotely, we can use the DCM server IP address as the URL: http://DCMserverIPAddress:8688/DataCenterManager, before opening the URL, we need to change the settings.xml file, which is located in the Intel® DCM installation folder, for example:
  • C:\Program Files\Intel\DataCenterManager\external\apache-tomcat\webapps\DataCenterManager\Settings.xml
  • Alternatively for Linux operating system, /opt/Intel/DataCenterManager/external/apache-tomcat/webapps/DataCenterManager/Settings.xml).
In this file, we change the computer name to the relevant IP address, there are 4 places which need to be changed in this file, after modifying this file and saving the changes, restart the DCM services, and then we can visit DCM reference UI remotely by inputting the URL above.

I have changed the computer name after I installed Intel® DCM successfully, then, I cannot open the reference UI even if I restart the DCM services.

This is because once DCM installed, the computer name will be filled in one DCM database config file, once the computer name changed, the config file will mismatch with the new computer name, the steps to solve this case:

1. Change the computer name to the original one
2. Uninstall Intel® DCM package
3. Change the computer name to the new one
4. Reinstall Intel® DCM

When I add a managed server to DCM hierarchy, an error pops up: "Managed server Discovery End With Error: Managed server is not reachable", what is the reason?

This error is mainly caused by an IPMI session which is not set up. Please make sure the BMC IP address is correct and can be reached by DCM server through network, also, make sure the managed server BMC has been enabled for LAN access

When I add managed server to DCM hierarchy, an error pops up: managed server Discovery End With Error: "Response failed with error code: (17) No Cipher Suite match with proposed security algorithms", what is the reason?

This error is mainly because the BMC LAN channel cipher suite privilege setting which does not comply with DCM requirement as follows. DCM requests that one of the first four BMC LAN channel cipher suites: cipher suite 0-3 must have ADMIN privilege, customer can use IPMItool to change the BMC LAN channel cipher suite privilege settings, then, try to add to DCM again

When I add managed server to DCM hierarchy, an error pops up: Managed server Discovery End With Error: "Response failed with error code: (13) Unauthorized name", what is the reason?

This error is mainly because customer has input a non-existent BMC user, or the BMC user input is not enabled, please use IPMItool to check the BMC user information, and enable the correct user for DCM, then try to add to DCM again

When I add managed server to DCM hierarchy, an error pops up: Managed server Discovery End With Error: "Response failed with error: User-Password authentication check failed (RAKP 2 check) (17)", what is the reason?

This error is mainly because the authentication check cannot be passed. Customer may have input the wrong password, if customer has forgotten the password, please use IPMItool to reset the password, then, try to add in DCM again

When I add managed server to DCM hierarchy, an error pops up: Managed server Discovery End With Error: "Response failed with error: Set session privilege level to level (4) failed: (0x81) Requested level exceeds Channel or User Privilege Limit", what is the reason?

This error is mainly because the BMC user customer input has not ADMIN privilege, DCM request the BMC username used for communication has ADMIN privilege, please use IPMItool to check the BMC user information, and change the relevant user to ADMIN privilege level, then try to add in DCM again

When I add a server managed server in DCM hierarchy, I think I have right configed the managed server BMC, including cipher-suite, user privilege, password setting, but I still cannot add this managed server to DCM, how about the other possible reasons?

There are some possible reasons for this case:
  • Be sure you have chosen the right connector name when adding the managed server
  • Be sure the BMC IP address can be reached by IPMI
  • If you add Node Manager managed server, be sure this server platform is Node Manager enabled platform, the ME function has been enabled in BIOS (for some platforms), the BMC SDR already contains the Node Manager OEM SDR list, and Node Manager can be reached through IPMI raw command

I have added the server managed server into Intel® DCM hierarchy successfully, to verify Intel® DCM, I also want to use IPMI raw command to operate Node Manager directly, how do I know the Node Manager slave address and channel number?

There are 2 ways to get the Node Manager slave address and channel number:
  • Using IPMItool dump the SDR file, find the Node Manager OEM SDR (57 01 00 0D), and get the Node Manager slave address and channel number from the Node Manager OEM SDR list
  • Open Intel® DCM reference UI, change log level to trace <configuration ® Global option ® log level> add the managed server or rediscover the managed server, after successfully add the managed server, open Intel® DCM log file (in Intel® DCM installation folder), find the string which contains "Found Intel Node Manager technology Discovery SDR. rsAddr=??, targetChannelNum=?". The rsAddr is the Node Manager I2C address and targetChannelNum is the target channel

I have added the server node into Intel® DCM hierarchy successfully, but I cannot get the power readings for a long time, what is the reason? The possible reasons for this case are:

1. Make sure you have started the function to get power reading (Click "resuming monitoring" button in upper site of the reference UI)

2. Make sure you have waited 3-6 minutes after resuming the power monitoring.

3. Make sure your local time has been synched up with Intel® DCM server time.

4. Make sure the server node BMC is online and can be reached through Intel® DCM server.

If the problem is still there, please use IPMItool raw command to reach the Node Manager and check if it works well.

I have one HP platform with iLO 2 system, can I use Intel® DCM to manage this server managed server?

Intel® DCM can manage or monitor HP servers with iLO2 or iLO3 system, to manage the platform with iLO2 system:
  • Updating the HP server firmware to the latest version
  • Add the managed server to Intel® DCM hierarchy with the connector name "Data Center Manageability Interface"
  • If you want to do power capping on HP platform, you need to activate the HP iLO2 license, after the activation, the managed servers need to be power-cycled and rediscovered to work with Intel® DCM on power capping

I have added the server node into Intel® DCM hierarchy successfully, to verify Intel® DCM, I also want to use IPMI raw command to operate Node Manager directly, how do I know the Node Manager slave address and channel number?

There are 2 ways to get the Node Manager slave address and channel number:
Using IPMItool dump the SDR file, find the Node Manager OEM SDR (57 01 00 0D), and get the Node Manager slave address and channel number from the Node Manager OEM SDR list Open Intel® DCM reference UI, change log level to trace <configuration ® Global option ® log level> add the node or rediscover the node, after successfully add the node, open Intel® DCM log file (in Intel® DCM installation folder), find the string which contains "Found NM Discovery SDR. rsAddr=??, targetChannelNum=?". The rsAddr is the Node Manager I2C address and targetChannelNum is the target channel

I have added managed server to Intel® DCM hierarchy, and can monitor the power reading successfully, but when I set power policy, there seems to be no effect, what are the possible reasons

For this case, the possible reasons are:
  • Make sure the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology feature has been enabled in BIOS
  • Ensure the managed server operating system supports ACPI3.0 (or later), and ACPI service in managed server operating system has been started, by default, the popular operating system (such as Windows 2003, Windows 2008, RHEL5, SUSE10, SUSE11, etc) already support ACPI3.0. If you want get more information about ACPI, please visit: http://www.acpi.info )
  • Make sure the server managed operating system supports ACPI3.1 (or later), and ACPI service in server managed operating system has been started
  • If the managed server has no active workload and remains idle the power reading may accurate, but may not change until the managed server is active again

In my Intel® DCM reference UI, there is always one error message pops up: "Failed to subscribe predefined event ..." What does this mean?

This means that the Intel® DCM predefined event cannot be subscribed on the target managed server, the pre-defined events will not pop up when they are trigged. This is mainly because there are no available BMC SEL selectors for Intel® DCM to subscribe the pre-defined events. To solve this, please make sure there are free SEL selectors in the managed server BMC

I have added one managed server to Intel® DCM hierarchy, then, I want to import the original Intel® DCM hierarchy into current Intel® DCM version, but the importation always fails, why?

If you want to import an Intel® DCM hierarchy, please make sure there are no entities or groups in the DCM UI, that is to say, there should be no managed servers or groups exist in DCM UI before importation, you need to delete the existing entities before importing another Intel® DCM hierarchy. This by design will avoid the confliction.

If you want to import an Intel® DCM hierarchy, please make sure the current Intel® DCM hierarchy is empty, that is to say, there should be no managed servers or groups exist before importation, you need to delete the existing entities before import another Intel® DCM hierarchy

I have imported the old Intel® DCM hierarchy into my current Intel® DCM reference UI, and resume the power monitoring, but I cannot get the power readings, if I manually add the managed servers, I can get the power readings, why?

For security concern, when exporting the hierarchy, the managed server BMC password has not been exported, then, after importing, there is no BMC password, the authentication check will fail, and there will be no power readings. For this case, 2 methods can be considered:
  • Importing the hierarchy into DCM reference UI, change the managed servers' property, add the BMC password manually, and run re-discovery
  • Editing the hierarchy xml file, add the BMC_PASSWORD property field for the relevant managed servers, then, importing the new modified hierarchy xml file
