Open Source at Intel: Building with the Ecosystem

How do we make Linux* solutions robust and widely available on our platforms? Along with our contributions to open-source projects and initiatives, Intel collaborates with all of the constituents of the software ecosystem—consortia and standards bodies, developer communities, educational institutions, and commercial vendors—to further refine and stabilize downstream products. In addition, Intel® Capital invests in companies developing technologies that complement our strategic objectives. Those portfolio companies benefit from Intel’s deep engineering and manufacturing expertise, the pioneering work of Intel Labs, and access to architecture roadmaps to guide development work. As a result, a wide array of products that deliver stellar performance, rich feature sets, and energy efficiency reach the market early and achieve measurable success.

Linux* operating system vendors (OSVs) rely on the richness and depth of available open-source software as a key aspect of their business model. Intel engineers many of the open-source drivers that unlock the capabilities of platforms based on Intel architecture. Intel’s involvement in open-source projects that help complete the solution stacks for mobile computing and enterprise applications increase market opportunities and bolster OSV efforts throughout the industry. Additionally, because of the work that has been done to develop and perfect a wide range of enterprise-caliber software components, Linux operating system vendors have been able to build a strong server OEM business. Major OEMs, including HP, Dell, and IBM, bundle the Linux operating system on their server hardware, strengthening and extending the overall ecosystem. Intel also provides powerful software development tools—including Intel® Parallel Studio XE and Intel® Cluster Studio—to boost performance on multi-core systems and enable rapid development of sophisticated, reliable Linux solutions.

Intel’s contributions on several levels help independent software vendors (ISVs) incorporate open-source components into their products. Top-notch development tool suites targeting the Linux* platform, including compilers, libraries, thread checking tools, and profilers, streamline the development effort and lead to efficient, optimized code. Intel’s project work on middleware components, graphical toolkits, multimedia libraries, database libraries, and other components let ISVs construct solutions using proven software building blocks, leading to early market releases. Intel’s collaboration with ISVs also includes financial investments, engineering work, and market development assistance.
