Intel® C++ and Fortran Compilers for Windows* - Required Microsoft Development Software

This article provides an overview of the Microsoft development software required to use the Intel® C++ and Intel® Visual Fortran Compilers as part of Intel® Parallel Studio XE 2020. For more details, refer to the Release Notes (Fortran, C++). Abbreviated information on older versions is below.

Microsoft Development Software Requirements

To use the Microsoft Visual Studio* development environment or command-line tools to build IA-32 or Intel® 64 architecture applications, one of:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2019* Professional Edition (or higher edition) or Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2019* with 'Desktop development with C++' workload installed (NOTE! Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 does not install the C++ component by default - it must be selected under the Workloads view during installation. Refer to this article for details.)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2017* Professional Edition (or higher edition) or Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2017* with 'Desktop development with C++' workload installed (NOTE! Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 does not install the C++ component by default - you must select it using the Customize option during installation. Refer to this article for details.)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2015* Professional Edition (or higher edition) or Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015* with 'Common Tools for Visual C++ 2015' component installed 
    • To use the Intel® Visual Fortran Compiler with Microsoft Visual Studio 2015*, it is necessary to install the 'Common Tools for Visual C++ 2015' component from Visual Studio.  This article explains how.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2013* Professional Edition (or higher edition) or Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2013*
  • Intel® Visual Fortran development environment based on Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Shell* (included with some license types of Intel® Visual Fortran Compiler and compiler versions up to 19.0.2)  
    • Intel® Visual Fortran development environment based on Microsoft Visual Studio 2015* Shell is included with Academic and Commercial licenses for Intel® Parallel Studio XE 2019 Composer Edition for Fortran Windows* Updates 1 and 2 only.  It is not included with Updates 3, 4 or 5 (see this article for details), Evaluation licenses or the "free tools" license obtained through the free software program for students and educators. This development environment provides everything necessary to edit, build and debug Fortran applications. Some features of the full Visual Studio product are not included, such as:
      • Resource Editor (see ResEdit* (http://www.resedit.net/), a third-party tool, for a substitute)
      • Automated conversion of Compaq* Visual Fortran projects
      • Microsoft language tools such as Visual C++* or Visual Basic*
    • To use the Intel® Visual Fortran Compiler with Microsoft Visual Studio 2015* Shell, it is necessary to install the Microsoft Windows 10* Software Development Kit (SDK). This article explains how. 
  • To use command-line tools only to build IA-32 architecture applications, one of:
    • Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2015 for Windows Desktop*
    • Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop*
  • To use command-line tools only to build Intel® 64 architecture applications, one of:
    • Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2015 for Windows Desktop*
    • Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop*
    • Microsoft Build Tools 2017*
    • Microsoft Build Tools 2019*

The following lists Microsoft Visual Studio versions supported by previous versions of the Intel® compilers . Also noted is information on the included Fortran development environment, if any.

  • Intel® Composer XE 2013 SP1 Update 1 or later (compiler 14.0.1) - VS2008, VS2010, VS2012, VS2013 (includes VS2010 Shell)
  • Intel® Composer XE 2013 SP1 initial release (compiler 14.0.0) - VS2008, VS2010, VS2012 (includes VS2010 Shell)
  • Intel® Composer XE 2013 (compiler 13.0 and 13.1) - VS2008, VS2010, VS2012 (includes VS2010 Shell)
  • Intel® Composer XE 2011 (compiler 12.0 and 12.1) - VS2005, VS2008, VS2010 (includes VS2008 Shell (12.0) or VS2010 Shell (12.1))
  • Intel® C++ and Fortran Compilers 11.1 - VS2005, VS2008 (includes VS2008 Shell)
  • Intel® C++ and Fortran Compilers 11.0 - VS2003, VS2005, VS2008 (includes VS2005 Premier Partner Edition)
