Retail Pandemic Reference Implementations

In the event of a global pandemic, people from across the world need to quickly adopt new ways to interact with each other to maintain safety and resume activities. Businesses need to uphold higher safety standards while people learn to quickly adapt to the new normal. For most organizations, their existing setup and resources will make it challenging to prevent the spread of illness and operate safely.


During a pandemic, the fast evolving environment requires agility and accuracy to improve safety logistics and minimize the spread of the disease. One of the key technologies that is helping organizations create safe environments for people to resume activities is Computer Vision, which is a natural fit in retail situations. Intelligent vision technologies from Intel are empowering businesses to organize and manage their spaces to reduce public health risks and prioritize people’s safety.

To illustrate the value that computer vision brings in this scenario, Intel has created a series of reference implementations. These are specific solutions that teach different ways of using computer vision and provide solutions built from open source tools that a developer can use as an example to generate lifesaving technologies.

Each reference implementation is a self contained use case built with Intel® tools and the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit. Hardware based developer kits are also available for exploring these implementations, including the IEI Tank* AIoT Developer Kit, UP Squared* AI Vision X Developer Kit, and Intel® Neural Compute Stick 2. All of them come with the required software, including pre-trained models.
