Leafy Sea Dragon version 0.2 is a proof-of-concept, 100% Java, grid prototype sending simulated Cetacean sounds over the Internet and playing them back on an ordinary PC.

With Leafy Sea Dragon, people will be able use their PC and hand-held devices to interact with Cetaceans anywhere in the world.

With Leafy Sea Dragon, you can setup your own Cetacean interaction and research system and take part in the continued development of the system.

Version 0.2 contains a Cetacean audio simulator and 3 nodes working on 3 different hosts (or same host):

- a Cetacean interface node (CUiNode), running on its own PC,

- a converter node to convert Cetacean signals to human formats (C2hNode),
running on its own PC or on the same PC as the CUiNode, and

- a human interface node (HUiNode) to play and display the Cetacean signals on another PC
(and eventually to send human signals to Cetaceans, in future versions).
A version of the HUiNode uses J2ME MIDP 2.0.

The Leafy Sea Dragon system is designed to be used for Cetacean research and for setting up a world-wide Internet-based Cetacean listening and two-way acoustics interaction system (human-to-cetacean and vice versa).

The Leafy Sea Dragon is based on a new generic grid package, org.smgridlayer0, that can be used for any type of IP-socket-based distributed application.

Version 0.2 of Leafy Sea Dragon contains the necessary components to work as an effective demonstration of the design and the technology but it is not complete yet.

Here is what is missing today in Leafy Sea Dragon to make this happen:

- The interface to a hydrophone, which is an underwater microphone/speaker.
We are considering to use hydrophone C303 from
The software development is in progress.
Access to Cetaceans should be relatively easy as Leafy Sea Dragon has been designed for use with Cetacean in the wild.

- Improved human user interface for PCs, e.g., a graphical user interface; in progress.

- J2ME midlet using MIDP version 2.0 for access by hand-held devices; in progress.

- Improved grid access by multiple authorized HUiNodes on their own PCs or on J2ME hand-held devices; in progress.
