Intel MPI Library and MPSS compatibility

The following table lists all supported versions of the Intel® MPI Library and the Intel® Manycore Platform Software Stack (MPSS). Use this as a reference on the cross-compatibility between the library, MPSS, and all supported fabrics.

Intel® MPSS is the open source Operating System for the Intel® Xeon Phi™ Coprocessor.  Intel® MPI Library 4.1 is the first version to offer formal support for executing in an environment featuring the Intel® Xeon Phi™ Coprocessor cards.

The table provides details on which communication modes and interconnect fabrics are supported.  Here's a full list of all available options.

Communication modes:

  • Offload: MPI job will exclusively use Intel® Xeon hosts only - usage of the coprocessor cards will be via offloaded pragmas/directives
  • Native: MPI job will exclusively use Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor cards only - no ranks will be run on host machine
  • Symmetric: MPI job will use a mix of Intel® Xeon hosts and Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor cards - ranks will run in a heterogeneous environment

Interconnect fabrics:

  • shm: Shared memory
  • tcp: TCP/IP-capable network fabrics, such as Ethernet and InfiniBand* (through IPoIB*)
  • dapl: DAPL-capable network fabrics, such as InfiniBand*, iWarp*, and XPMEM* (through DAPL*)
  • ofa: OFA-capable network fabrics including InfiniBand* (through OFED* verbs)
  • tmi: TMI-capable network fabrics including Intel® True Scale Fabric, Myrinet* (through Tag Matching Interface)

NOTE: The DAPL auto-provider selection mechanism and improved NUMA support require dapl-2.0.37 or higher

NOTE: Minimum requirement for Ivy Bridge/Ivy Town systems is RHEL 6.4 or higher

Any listed versions of the Intel® MPI Library may work with newer or older versions of Intel® MPSS but compatibility is not guaranteed. We recommend you upgrade to the latest software stack always.
