Dr. Darrell D. E. Long is the Director of the Storage Systems Research Center. He is Professor of Computer Science and holds the Kumar Malavalli Endowed Chair. His current research in storage systems include high performance storage systems, archival storage systems and energy-efficient storage systems. Other research includes computer system reliability, video-on-demand, applied machine learning, mobile computing and cyber security. He is a Fellow of the IEEE the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a visiting professor at several universities in the United States, Uruguay, Australia and France. He also serves on numerous committees and advisory panels for various Federal government agencies.
Dr. Ethan Miller is a Professor of Computer Science in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering, where he holds the Symantec Presidential Chair in Storage & Security. He is the Director of the NSF I/UCRC Center for Research in Storage Systems and the Associate Director of the Storage Systems Research Center. He was a member of the RAID project at UC Berkeley, where he did his PhD on a decentralized parallel file system for high-end scientific computing. His current research interests include archival storage systems, file systems for storage-class memories, scalable view-based metadata management, and issues in reliability, scalability, and security, both for short-term and archival storage.
The Storage Systems Research Center (SSRC) is a partnership between academia and industry to explore and develop new technologies and techniques to improve the manageability, scalability, security, reliability, longevity, and performance of storage systems. SSRC researchers conduct high-quality, industrially-relevant fundamental research. The center also facilitates collaboration in research and education, and provides pathways to simplify direct transfer of university developed ideas, research results, and technology to its industrial sponsors, helping them to improve their competitive posture in the global marketplace. SSRC also focuses on providing talented graduate and undergraduate students the technical background and industry interaction they will use as they go on to become the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Today’s storage system stack is based upon virtualizing all new storage to mimic 1986 SCSI disk drives. Over the past 30 years, the industry has created device drives, volume manager, file systems and more recently flash translation layers when bringing new products to market. We plan to re-architect the entire storage systems stack to support native attachment of storage devices in memory space, rather than I/O space.
