Intel® Performance Tuning Utility 2.0 Product Overview

INSTALLATION

Introduction

The Intel® Performance Tuning Utility is a cross-platform performance analysis tool set succeeding the VTune™ Performance Analyzer. Along with such traditional features of the VTune analyzer as identifying the hottest modules and functions of the application, tracking call sequences, identifying performance-critical source code, the Intel Performance Tuning Utility has new, more powerful capabilities of data collection, analysis, and visualization. Although most of those capabilities are developed by requests of experienced in performance tuning users, most of new features are easy to use for people who are new to performance tuning.

This version of the Intel Performance Tuning Utility introduces the following new features comparing with VTune Analyzer features:

  • Statistical Call Graph
  • Loop profiler
  • Basic Block analysis
  • Result difference
  • Events over IP view

Installation

For information on product installation, see instructions in the Installation Guide, located at <install_dir>/INSTALL.txt.

Launching the Tool

To launch the graphical user interface version of the Intel Performance Tuning Utility, run Eclipse* 3.2 and select the Intel® Performance Tuning Utility perspective.

To work with the Intel Performance Tuning Utility from command line, use the following commands. Command line utilities are located in the <install_dir>/bin directory:

vtsarun <options> Run a sampling tuning experiment.
vtssrun <options> Run a statistical callgraph tuning experiment.
vtsaview <options> View sampling data collection results.
vtssview <options> View statistical callgraph results.
vtsadiff <options> Compare results of the sampling experiments.

For example:
# vtssrun ./ -- /bin/ps

NOTE: To set the search path to include the Intel Performance Tuning Utility commands, enter the following command:
# export PATH=$PATH:<install_dir>/bin
<install_dir> is the Intel Performance Tuning Utility installation directory you choose when unzipping the product archive.
