The Hackathon has started. June 24, 2013 the Code for Good Hackathon started here, at California State University, Sacramento (Sac State). We have all been waiting for it. The experience that most of the IUEE participants have been waiting for.
Our team, Team Numero 2, is composed by 6 members, 3 males and 3 females. The 3 males are all recent High Schools graduates, they are Joseph Shiboyan, who will be pursuing a Computer Engineering bachelor here at Sac State; David Ta, who will also be pursuing a Computer Engineering bachelor but at the University of California, Davis (UCDavis) instead; and finally, but not least, Marcel Morris who will be pursuing a Computer Science bachelor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (CalPoly, Pomona). The 3 females are Diana Monreal, who will be entering to pursue a Computer Science bachelor at Sac State this fall of 2013; Thoa Nguyen, who's currently a student at Sacramento City College pursuing an Electrical Engineering bachelor and who will be also entering at the Sac State campus to continue pursuing her degree. She will learn that here at Sac State, it will be not just Electrical Engineering, but rather Electrical and Electronics Engineering; and finally the other female is myself Christian Yarima Poveda Alvarado who prefers to just be called Yarima, I'm currently a double major in Engineering hoping to pursue a bachelors in Civil Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I'm entering my third yeah here at Sac State.
Out of our six members, only one has programing experience but as the great Albert Einstein said " The process of scientific discovery is. in effect, a continual flight from wonder." My team and I will continue to grow and to develop ourselves into some decent or even great programmers. Some additional information about our group is that we were the winners of the Ideation Business Application Development Competition, as I like to call it.
Our team's idea is to develop an application which profit/non-profit organizations could use as an automatic donation platform to raise money and solve their lack of funding. The app's name will be Food Bank Hero, since the inspiration and ideation were developed to help the Sacramento Food Bank & Family's needs. The app itself will be a game very similar to Rock Band; both games will have something sliding down which the user will have to tag to receive some sort of reward. However, in Rock Band you have lights that you need to tap on in you game, Food Bank Hero, on the other hand, will have ether rotten or fresh food falling from above. The user will have to select the fresh food and drag it to a basket to receive points.
As a team we have decided to help not just in the design of features, but also in the programing. Therefore, we are almost all in the process of learning programming basic knowledge from sites such as Khan Academy, Code Academy, Udacity and Coursera to make sure that everyone in the team gets some knowledge of HTML 5. Eventually, we will start setting up roles and dividing the team into little groups to get more stuff done for this application.
As of now, we don't have much developed for this application but since everything is a process of progress you will be hearing back from me soon to update you about the progress my team and I will be making and will have made. But so far, the IUEE and more specific Code for Good Hackathon experience has been excellent.
